Horrorstor

Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking.
To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they'll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.
A traditional haunted house story in a thoroughly contemporary setting, "HorrorstOr "comes packaged in the form of a glossy mail order catalog, complete with product illustrations, a home delivery order form, and a map of Orsk's labyrinthine showroom. It's "a treat for fans of "The Evil Dead" or "Zombieland," complete with affordable solutions for better living."--

The Totally Ninja Raccoons Are Here!

I own a bookstore, and I wrote a book, but it's not available as an ebook. Amazon is not my friend, and it's not yours. I published my book, The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigfoot, through IngramSpark and only made it available as a real book. Your customers won't find it in an electronic version.

Why did I do this? Because I believe in bookstores staffed by lovers of books. I'd rather have real people selling my book to people they feel are the best match for my book. The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigfoot is your classic trio with a twist. Think the Three Investigators meet the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles with a little Ghostbusters in the mix.

Our furry protagonists discover they are not meant to be ordinary bandits, but rather carry the potential to be something extraordinary, ninjas. In this origin story, the Ninja Raccoons begin their ninja training, and meet their first potential employer--Gypsy the cat. Gypsy sends the Raccoons on their first mission, to capture the elusive Bigfoot.

The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigfoot is a book I feel confident and comfortable suggesting to 2nd or 3rd graders who love animals, cryptids, and adventure.

The book is available through Ingram for just 5.99 at standard industry discount. It's around 4,000 words. It's been professionally written, illustrated, edited, and approved by professionals in the field of children education.

In the soon-to-be available follow-up, The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet the Weird & Wacky Werewolf, the Ninja Raccoons continue their training, and meet a creature of legend, a werewolf.

The Ninja Raccoons decide to track and capture the werewolf for the prize offered for capturing such a creature. The Raccoons learn that the werewolf isn't as terrifying as the myths, and friends are more important than money.

Thank you for your taking the time to read about The Totally Ninja Raccoons. I hope to start a new trend. Together, we can continue to keep bookstores vibrant and beating in the heart of their communities.

Bear and Bunny

From the inimitable Daniel Pinkwater comes a funny and disarmingly sweet tale of two forest friends musing on the nature of a good pet. The bear and the bunny are friends who like to wander in the woods, look for things to eat, sing songs, and talk things over. One day, the bunny asks the bear, "Why do we not have some kind of pet?" Well, the bear is not sure what a pet is. So the bunny explains that it's an animal that you take care of and feed, and one that loves you. But a pinecone is not the right pet for a bear and a bunny. And a caterpillar is nice, but it may not be very much fun. After a much-needed nap in the forest, will these two find their perfect pet? Beloved author Daniel Pinkwater and masterful illustrator Will Hillenbrand return with another charming and humorous story starring the sweetest of friends, a bear and bunny.

Top Five Books for Christian Adults this Christmas Season

Is there someone in your life for whom their faith is an integral part of THEIR life? Are you looking for a great book to buy the Christian(s) in your life that is NOT one of the top twenty most over-marketed Christian books sold at Walmart? Look no further than From My Shelf's 2015 list, here:

These are not listed in a particular order of favorites. We're excited about all of them! It's just a question of which best fits your recipient and your holiday budget. The staff at From My Shelf would be happy to help on both counts. Come by the bookstore any time, or contact us via email, website, facebook, or phone, for more personalized help.

1. Praying for Strangers: An Adventure of the Human Spirit by River Jordan: I don't know if River Jordan is her birth-certificate name or not. It doesn't matter. Her book is refreshing. Ron Hall's front cover review says, "Will alter the way you see those seemingly random people that God places daily in your path." Agreed. Paperback, suggested cover price, $15.00 (with better discounts here, of course!)

2. A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, and a Great War: How J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Rediscovered Faith, Friendship, and Heroism in the Cataclysm of 1914-1918 by Joseph Loconte. I was drawn to this for several reasons: (a)The Inklings. (b)I have read and discussed a lot about the influence and symbolism of World War 2 in Lewis's and in Tolkien's works, but I haven't seen as much about World War 1 themes in their literature. (c)There's not enough written for the layman about World War 1, period. Textbooks, yes. A book making these events more approachable to the every day 21st-Century reader, not so much. Hardcover, suggested cover price, $24.99 (we'll help you out on price!)

3. (Speaking of the Inklings.....) Joy: Poet, Seeker, and the Woman Who Captivated C.S. Lewis by Abigail Santamaria. If you're a C.S. Lewis fan, you've probably read Surprised by Joy, C.S. Lewis's recounting of his personal journey, late in life, from confirmed bachelor to new husband, from happy newlywed to grief-stricken widower, from believer to one who had to put his faith in heaven to the hardest test. There were two wonderful films produced -- one in the UK and one in the US -- called "Shadowlands" which also introduced millions of viewers to this personal side of Lewis's life and faith. Here is the book we've been waiting for since then. Hardcover, suggested cover price, $28.00 (ask us our prices, ok?)

4. The Accidental Pilgrim: Finding God and His Mother in Tuscany by Judith Sornberger. If you know Judith, this book will be an even better treat, because you can imagine Judith's down-to-earth sharing, her wryly gentle tone in reading it aloud, and the parts of her life she is writing about. Judith is a recently-retired English professor from Mansfield University, right down the road! This frank, funny, intimate, surprising, spiritual memoir takes us along with Judith from struggling single mother to awestruck, amateur art historian as images of Christ and Mary resound in her heart on a trip to Italy. Includes beautiful color reproductions of many works of art; quotes from sources as diverse as D.H. Lawrence to Pablo Neruda to the Gospel of Luke; and great travel writing. An interesting multi-genre piece that will challenge, delight, validate, and surprise you. Paperback, suggested cover price, $29.95, (ask about member discounts! We can even get it signed/inscribed for you!)

5. Celtic Devotions: A Guide to Morning and Evening Prayer by Calvin Miller. Sure, there are the Biblical prayers, psalms, and quotes you might expect to find in a devotional. This slim volume, however, holds so much more. Somehow, these brief entries for morning and evening prayer for 30 days, are so rich and lovely and poetic, they fill you up without leaving you feeling overwhelmed. Too many times when I try to follow a Bible study or devotional program, I end up feeling either overwhelmed, out of my league, or inadequate. Sure, a lot of that is "my stuff".... but I think there are a lot of us who bring similar baggage to these kinds of books, and this one is like drinking clear, pure water. Paperback, suggested cover price $16.00 (see notes below and above :)

Sometimes it's necessary to read other people's "suggested book lists" or "suggested gift lists" and buy the items other places. We ask that, if possible, if you are going to buy any of the books on our lists, that you consider buying them with us first. If you prefer to shop local in your neck of the woods, GREAT. Please don't take these suggestions, though, and buy these at the Evil Empire. That's not cool, man. THANKS!!

Star Wars and Philosophy: More Powerful Than You Can Possibly Imagine

The Star Wars films continue to revolutionize science fiction, creating new standards for cinematographic excellence, and permeating popular culture around the world. The films feature many complex themes ranging from good versus evil and moral development and corruption to religious faith and pragmatism, forgiveness and redemption, and many others.

The essays in this volume tackle the philosophical questions from these blockbuster films including: Was Anakin predestined to fall to the Dark Side? Are the Jedi truly role models of moral virtue? Why would the citizens and protectors of a democratic Republic allow it to descend into a tyrannical empire? Is Yoda a peaceful Zen master or a great warrior, or both? Why is there both a light and a dark side of the Force? Star Wars and Philosophy ponders the depths of these subjects and asks what it truly means to be mindful of the "living force."

More Doctor Who and Philosophy

"More Doctor Who and Philosophy" is a completely new collection of chapters, additional to "Doctor Who and Philosophy" (2010), by the same editors. Since that first "Doctor Who and Philosophy," much has happened in the Whoniverse: a new and controversial regeneration of the Doctor, multiple new companions, a few creepy new enemies of both the Doctor and planet Earth.

New questions have been raised and new questioners have come along, so there are plenty of new topics for philosophical scrutiny. Is the impossible girl really impossible? Is there anything wrong with an inter-species lesbian relationship (the kids weren t quite ready for that in 1963, but no one blinks an eye in 2015)? Can it really be right for the Doctor to lie and to selectively forget? We even have two authors who have figured out how to build a TARDIS instructions included

An added feature of this awesome new volume is that the editors have reached out to insiders of "Who" fandom, people who run hugely successful "Who" conventions, play in "Who"-inspired bands, and run wildly popular podcasts and websites, to share their privileged insights into why the Doctor is so philosophically deep.

The Way of Kings

Brandon Sanderson, widely acclaimed for his work completing Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time saga, begins a grand cycle of his own, with The Way of Kings, Book One of the Stormlight Archive.
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.
It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.
One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.
Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called "The Way of Kings." Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.
Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar's niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan's motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.
The result of over ten years of planning, writing, and world-building, "The Way of Kings" is but the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive, a bold masterpiece in the making.

Speak again the ancient oaths,
Life before death.
Strength before weakness.
Journey before Destination.
and return to men the Shards they once bore.
The Knights Radiant must stand again.

Guns on the Early Frontiers

This excellent reference work identifies the guns used in America during the era of eastern settlement and the westward advance of the frontier -- particularly the arms used in the West during the first half of the nineteenth century. More than a descriptive record of gun types, the book relates the weapons to the people who made, sold, and used them. Accompanying chapters on "Arming the American Indian, "Personal Weapons of the Traders and Trappers," as well as surveys of military arms, small cannon, and other accessories are rare illustrations of antique muskets, repeating rifles, pistols, flintlock guns, Colt revolvers, powder horns, bullet molds, boat cannon, and other weapons -- all clearly identified and described.

The Isis Apocalypse: The History, Strategy, and Doomsday Vision of the Islamic State

The Islamic State is one of the most lethal and successful jihadist groups in modern history, surpassing even al-Qaeda. Thousands of its followers have marched across Syria and Iraq, subjugating millions, enslaving women, beheading captives, and daring anyone to stop them. Thousands more have spread terror beyond the Middle East under the Islamic State's black flag.

How did the Islamic State attract so many followers and conquer so much land? By being more ruthless, more apocalyptic, and more devoted to state-building than its competitors. The shrewd leaders of the Islamic State combined two of the most powerful yet contradictory ideas in Islam-the return of the Islamic Empire and the end of the world-into a mission and a message that shapes its strategy and inspires its army of zealous fighters. They have defied conventional thinking about how to wage wars and win recruits. Even if the Islamic State is defeated, jihadist terrorism will never be the same.

Based almost entirely on primary sources in Arabic-including ancient religious texts and secret al-Qaeda and Islamic State letters that few have seen - William McCants' "The ISIS Apocalypse" explores how religious fervor, strategic calculation, and doomsday prophecy shaped the Islamic State's past and foreshadow its dark future.

Let me smell whatever just plopped outta that unicorn's hindquarters."

Turns out, unicorn poop is a natural sudsing agent. That's right. You too can now wash yourself with poo. Fantastic smelling poo! This rainbow-colored, layered "soap bar" includes vegan-friendly oils that have a range of fantastic smells such as birthday cake, blueberry muffin, cola, butterscotch, and vanilla. Firearms, Traps, & Tools of the Mountain Men

This classic, scholarly history of the fur trappers and traders of the early nineteenth century focuses on the devices that enabled the opening of the untracked American west. Sprinkled with interesting facts and old western lore, this guide to traps and tools is also a lively history. The era of the mountain man is distinct in American history, and Russell's exhaustive coverage on the guns, traps, knives, axes, and other iron tools of this era, along with meticulous appendices, is astonishing. The result of thirty-five years of painstaking research, this is the definitive guide to the tools of the mountain men.

The Dog Who Could Fly: The Incredible True Story of a WWII Airman and the Four-Legged Hero Who Flew at His Side

A thoroughly enjoyable story of heroism and true friendship ("Publishers Weekly," starred review), this "Sunday Times" top ten bestseller is the true account of a German shepherd who was adopted by the Royal Air Force during World War II, flying countless combat missions and surviving everything from crash-landings to parachute bailouts ultimately saving the life of his owner and dearest friend.
In the winter of 1939 in the cold snow of no-man s-land, two loners met and began an extraordinary journey that would turn them into lifelong friends. One was an orphaned puppy, abandoned by his owners as they fled Nazi forces. The other was a different kind of lost soul a Czech airman bound for the Royal Air Force and the country that he would come to call home.
Airman Robert Bozdech stumbled across the tiny German shepherd whom he named Ant after being shot down on a daring mission over enemy lines. Unable to desert the puppy, Robert hid Ant inside his jacket as he escaped. In the months that followed, the pair would save each other's lives countless times as they flew together with RAF Bomber Command. Finally grounded after being injured on a flight mission, Ant refused to abandon his duty, waiting patiently beside the runway for his master's return from every sortie, and refusing food and sleep until they were reunited. By the end of the war, Robert and Ant had become true war heroes, and Ant was justly awarded the Dickin Medal, the Animal VC.
With beautiful vintage black-and-white photos of Robert and Ant, "The Dog Who Could Fly" is a deeply moving story of loyalty in the face of adversity and the unshakable bond between a man and his best friend.

A Dance with Death

In their own vivid words, the women members of the Soviet air force recount their dramatic efforts against the German forces in World War II. These brave women, the first ever to fly in combat, proved that women could be among the best of warriors, withstanding the rigors of combat and downing the enemy.
The women who tell their stories here began the war mostly as inexperienced girls--many of them teenagers. In support of their homeland, they volunteered to serve as bomber and fighter pilots, navigator-bombardiers, gunners, and support crews. Flying against the Luftwaffe, they saw many of their friends--as well as many of their foes--fall to earth in flames. Their three combat Air Force regiments fought as many as one thousand missions during the war.
For their heroism and success against the enemy, two of the women's regiments were honored by designation as "Guard" regiments. At least thirty women were decorated with the gold star of Hero of the Soviet Union, their nation's highest award.
But equally courageous were the women's efforts to show the Red Army that they were entirely adequate to the great role they sought. For even though Stalin had decreed equality for both sexes, the women had to grapple initially with deep distrust from male pilots and Red Army officers, against whom they eventually prevailed.
War, Stalin-era politics, and human emotion mix in these gripping, first-person accounts. Supported by photographs of the women at war, the stories are unforgettable. Portraits of the women as they are now, taken by award-winning photographer Anne Noggle, add the perspective of time to the experiences of the survivors of this great dance with death.
