Scratch & Sniff Book of Weed (Board Books)

Legal in all 50 states, this entertaining, informative, and whimsically illustrated guide covers 4,000 years of weed and its significance--psychoactive, cultural, medical, sexual, and more--in just 22 pages and with 20 scratch-&-sniff scents. From the science behind the munchies to the botanical link between weed and beer; from weed's sexual upsides to its (literal) sexual downsides; from Tupac to Shakespeare to why weed makes music sound better: This book may just be the greatest-ever gift for anyone from the cannabis connoisseur to the cannabis curious.

Supernatural: The Usual Sacrifices

Sam and Dean Winchester have spent their lives on the road, battling every kind of supernatural threat. Over the years, after dozens of bloody adventures, they have faced everything from the yellow-eyed demon that killed their mother to vampires, ghosts, shapeshifters, angels and fallen gods. With the help of allies--both human and supernatural--they've discovered that every threat they vanquish opens a new door for evil to enter in.

Visitors passing through Brownsdale, Kentucky are often never seen again. The locals claim that it's easy to fall victim to the vast local caves if explored unaided, but when two young girls go missing Sam and Dean set out to investigate.
As the brothers start to suspect something far more sinister in the town, and possibly lurking in Mammoth Cave, they realise that someone is determined to protect the town secret--even if it means killing Sam and Dean himself.
A brand-new Supernatural novel, set during season 10, that reveals a previously unseen adventure for the Winchester brothers, from the hit TV series.

Author to Read At The Allen F. Pierce Free Library Central Library

The Allen F. Pierce Free Library Central Library will host a free children's author event for youth 12 and under and their parents on Friday June 23rd at 2PM. Author Kevin Coolidge will read from “The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigfoot” to children at the Allen F. Pierce Free Library Central Library 34 Fenner Ave, Troy, PA.

Last year, Coolidge published the first two books in his new series set in Wellsboro and Tioga County, Pa. “The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigfoot” is the first book in his series about the three raccoon brothers who become ninjas. “The series is for the 7- to 10-year-old reluctant reader who loves action, adventure and creatures whose existence has yet to be proven, like Bigfoot,” said Coolidge.

"I'm really looking forward to this event," says Coolidge. " It's a great library for such a small town with helpful librarians and volunteers and Troy is lucky to have it."

In the second book, the raccoons meet the “Weird & Wacky Werewolf.” In the third, they learn “The Secret of the Canyon,” in the fourth, meet “The Thunderbird” and in the fifth are involved in “The Catmas Caper.” The sixth book titled “The Totally Ninja Raccoons and the Secret of Nessmuk Lake” was just released in May.

The Totally Ninja Raccoons series will soon be in the library's circulation, and all six books will be available for purchase after the presentation. Kevin will happily sign and personalize copies bought at the event, or purchased elsewhere.

For more information call the Allen F. Pierce Free Library Central Library at 570-297-2745.

Susan Beckhorn Williams At From My Shelf Books & Gifts

From my Shelf Books & Gifts will host the award-winning author, Susan Beckhorn Williams on Saturday June 10th to celebrate her paperback release of "The Wolf's Boy". There's nothing like a dog and boy tale, and "The Wolf's Boy" is about the very first dog and boy story.

Kai burns to become a hunter and to earn a rightful place among his people. But that can never be. He was born with a clubfoot. It is forbidden for him to use or even touch a hunter's sacred weapons.

Shunned by the other boys, Kai turns to his true friends, the yellow wolves, for companionship. They have not forgotten the young human they nurtured as an abandoned infant. When Kai discovers a motherless cub in the pack, he risks everything to save her, bringing her back to live with him.

But as winter draws near, Kai's wolf grows ever more threatening in the eyes of the People. When the worst happens, Kai knows that they must leave for good. Together, they embark on a journey into the north-a place of unimaginable danger-that tests the power of friendship and the will to survive.

Award-winning author Susan Williams Beckhorn delivers a powerful tale set in Paleolithic times. Inspired by modern discoveries, Susan's careful research creates a vivid picture of a time when the first wolves came to live with humans and forged a bond that lives on to this day.

Susan Williams Beckhorn is the award-winning author of half a dozen children's books. Her novel, Wind Rider, a "first horse" story set in prehistoric Asia, received acclaim by KLIATT and Booklist, was a Book Sense Pick, and was selected to ALA's Amelia Bloomer List for literature which promotes equality for women. Susan grew up in a family where kids, animals, & the outdoors are cherished. She lives and writes in Rexville, NY.

Is Your Membership Current?

When I was growing up in Wellsboro, there wasn't a bookstore. You could get Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew at the Paxon's 5 & 10. The Acme had a shelf with a few mass market paperbacks, there was a used bookstore for a short time, but that was is.

The nearest bookstore was at the Arnot Mall, and it was always the first store I went to and sometimes the only one. I remember I had a membership, and it gave me 10% off. It was a lot in those days before the internet where everyone strives to undercut everyone else.

When my wife and I started From My Shelf Books & Gifts we wanted to build the type of store we wished were here when growing up. We wouldn't just have new books, or used books, or books, but games, gifts, and an awesome membership.

The membership program we developed wouldn't just give a 20% discount on new paperback, but 25% on new hardcovers, 30% off board games, and allow members to trade in their books for store credit.

There are some books I just won't give up, but some books I only am going to read once. For example, once you read it, a mystery just isn't a mystery anymore, but you might want to keep that history book for your collection, and there are some books I read every few years. The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, I get something new every time I read it.

So, for those people who like to hold on to their books, we developed the rewards program. Every dollar you spend is worth a point, and you can redeem points for special purchases dollars off. For example, 100 points is equal for ten dollars off! You can use these points on books, games, or custom orders.

Bring the family—it’s a family membership—and rack up the savings! You don't have to live in Tioga County to be a member. We have lots of people who visit that become members too. Membership pays for itself fast!

Get new books or used, gift or craft items, games, plush, and more for 20% to 30% off! From My Shelf Books & Gifts, 7 East Ave. Wellsboro.

The Midnight Plan of the Repo Man

From W. Bruce Cameron, the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling novel A Dog's Purpose, which is now a major motion picture

"The Midnight Plan of the Repo Man introduces my favorite kind of flawed cynical protagonist in Ruddy McCann, former football star, now Repo Man in a small town full of memorable weirdos. It's suspenseful, action-packed, romantic, and above all, truly funny. I loved it." Nelson DeMille, New York Times bestselling author

Ruddy McCann, former college football star, has experienced a seismic drop in popularity; he is now Kalkaska, Michigan's full-time repo man and part-time bar bouncer. His best friend is his low-energy Basset hound Jake, with whom he shares a simple life of stealing cars.

Simple, that is, until Ruddy starts hearing a voice in his head.

The voice introduces himself as Alan Lottner, a dead realtor. Ruddy isn't sure if Alan is real, or if he's losing his mind. To complicate matters, it turns out Katie, the girl he's fallen for, is Alan's daughter.

When Alan demands Ruddy find his murderers, Ruddy decides a voice in your head seeking vengeance is best ignored. When Alan also demands he clean up his act, and apartment, Ruddy tells him to back off, but where can a voice in your head go?

With a sweet romance, a murder mystery, a lazy but loyal dog and a town full of cabin-fevered characters you can't help but love, New York Times bestselling novelist W. Bruce Cameron's The Midnight Plan of the Repo Man is yet another laugh-out-loud, keep-you-up-late, irresistible read.

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End

In "Being Mortal," bestselling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending

Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit. Nursing homes, preoccupied with safety, pin patients into railed beds and wheelchairs. Hospitals isolate the dying, checking for vital signs long after the goals of cure have become moot. Doctors, committed to extending life, continue to carry out devastating procedures that in the end extend suffering.

Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession's ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified.

Full of eye-opening research and riveting storytelling, "Being Mortal" asserts that medicine can comfort and enhance our experience even to the end, providing not only a good life but also a good end.

The Totally Ninja Raccoons and the Secret of Nessmuk Lake

Help Wellsboro Get to the Top Ten!

WELLSBORO, PA—Independent We Stand, the national small business movement, has announced the 25 quarterfinalists of its inaugural 2017 America’s Main Streets contest. The 25 top vote-getters were chosen by public vote from the 253 nominees from 44 states.

Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, a quarterfinalist, is seeking more public votes to be selected as one of the 10 semifinalists in the national competition for $25,000 for downtown revitalization and “buying local” activities.

Voting for the semifinalists is ongoing and ends at midnight on Sunday, May 28 2017 with the top ten announced on or about Tuesday.

"If you’ve visited Wellsboro’s gaslight lined streets, you know there’s something special about this town, and now America knows it too," said Kevin Coolidge, a member of the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce and the owner of From My Shelf Books & Gifts, an independent bookstore at 7 East Avenue.

“We are encouraging people to vote for Wellsboro once a day from their IP addresses,” Coolidge said. "Based on the contest rules, everybody can cast an online vote once every 24 hours now through May 28 by visiting MainStreetContest.com.

Or, people can vote by going to the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page

The top 10 main streets in America will proceed to the final round, where a panel of judges will select the winner and announce their decision June 3.

We have an active chamber of commerce with over 300 members who are working together to build a strong community for today and tomorrow," Coolidge noted.

A relaxed and friendly vibe emanates from the Wellsboro community and its residents, according to Julie VanNess, Wellsboro chamber executive director. “Our town's tree-lined streets, grassy boulevards lined with gaslights, stately homes, and the town square known as “The Green” welcome you with hometown charm,” she said.

Founded in 1806, Wellsboro is the county seat of Tioga County and only minutes from the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, Pine Creek and the Pine Creek Rail Trail.

“Wellsboro’s Main Street and the community-at-large boast a wide variety of family-owned shops and businesses offering personal attention to your needs,” VanNess added.

“Lodging, food and unique storefronts can all be found in the Wellsboro area. That’s why the community is a favorite stop for those traveling Route 6 called “One of America’s most scenic drives” by National Geographic.

The goal of this national contest is "to promote the importance of America’s Main Streets and the small businesses that help them thrive," said Bill Brunelle, Independent We Stand co-founder and executive director.

Run by Independent We Stand, the national small business movement, the contest is a project of the Main Street America program operated by the National Main Street Center, which is a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

“We are so pleased to see how passionate people are about their Main Streets,” Brunelle said. “It’s evident by the broad range of nominations representing 44 states. Now, it’s time to rally and vote again for these 25 terrific quarterfinalists.”

Damn You William Shakespeare

I'm not mad at the Bard, not really, but today I am upset with a devotee of William Shakespeare, Eugene Schieffelin. I came across several smashed robin eggs, and I lamented on the foolishness of man meddling with nature.

Eugene Schieffelin was responsible for introducing the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) to North America. In 1890, he released 60 starlings into New York City’s Central Park. He did the same with another 40 birds in 1891. Schieffelin wanted to introduce all the birds mentioned in the plays of William Shakespeare to North America.

European starlings were not native to North America. Schieffelin imported the starlings from England. Scientists estimate that descendants from those two original released flocks now number at more than 200 million residing in the United States. The European Starling is now considered an invasive species.

Starlings fiercely defend their nest site, and are usually successful at evicting many other species of birds, including woodpeckers, Wood Ducks, Tree Swallows, Bluebirds, Purple Martins and Great Crested Flycatchers, Screech Owls and sometimes Kestrels. In Purple Martin houses, they may remove all the eggs or young of a whole colony and build one nest.

The smashed robin eggs were the result of a pair of nesting starlings rooting out a pair of robin parents. But have you put the love juice from the flower on the eyes of that Athenian, as I ... much worse, because I'm afraid you've given me good reason to curse you....

And since the quarrel
Will bear no color for the thing he is,
Fashion it thus: that what he is, augmented,
Would run to these and these extremities;
And therefore think him as a serpent's egg,
Which, hatch'd, would as his kind grow mischievous,
And kill him in the shell

Julius Caesar Act 2, scene 1, 28–34

About The Loch Ness Monster

Loch Ness is the second largest loch (lake) in Scotand with depths reaching over 750 feet! Loch Ness is famous for its creature, known as Nessie. The first recorded sighting was almost 1500 years ago!

In 1933, a man claimed the monster crossed the road in front of him. This led to increased interest in Nessie. Nessie hunters have used underwater cameras, fishing nets, and even submarines to try to locate her.

Some scientists think a family of sea dinosaurs, called plesiosaurs, might have become trapped in the loch. Other theories suggest the monster is a huge fish, surfacing trees, earthquake activity, or even swimming elephants.

Nessie is the most famous lake monster in the world. She's been in books, movies and TV shows. There's even a Loch Ness Monster roller Coaster. Is the Loch Ness Monster Real? Become a reading ninja, and decide for yourself.

Bookstore Cats

This is the book that Huck & Finn our store cats at From My Shelf Books & Gifts are in. It's not due out until Oct. 7, 2017, but we can take pre-orders now

Reading an article about cats who live in bookstores inspired author Brandon Schultz to further investigate the lives of bookstore cats. Cats have strong personalities that enchant and engage, and it turns out there are many of them living in every reader's favorite environment: the bookstore. With personalities and histories as varied as the books they tend, each cat has a story worth telling.

Collected here are their tales, along with enchanting photos of the feline employees in their shops. Most bookstore cats are famous in their local communities, many have been featured and profiled in entertainment outlets, and some even have their own books and social media accounts. Now, for the first time, some of the world's most beloved bookstore cats are collected together in one adorable directory, making the perfect gift for cat lovers, book lovers, shoppers, and the generally curious worldwide. Aside from keeping a bookseller free of mice, these noble creatures become part of the fabric of their environment and, while they chase away the mice, they lure in the world's cat-loving readers.

About the Author

Brandon Schultz loves cats, bookstores, and especially bookstores run by cats. Among other things he is a book publisher, travel writer, and ice cream enthusiast. This is his fourth book, and he lives in Brooklyn, New York, with a cat named Lucy, who has previously authored her own book.

The Adorable Circle of Life

Savage. Menacing. Ruthless.
Predators get a pretty bad rap. Sure, they prey on helpless animals that never stand a chance, but behind those jagged teeth, powerful jaws, and razor-sharp claws, every predator has a softer side. Maybe even an adorable one.

Everyone has compassion for the cute bunny or lamb. But what about their predators who are working hard for their meal? Capturing their prey is a life-or-death game. Just think about the last time you had to hunt for food while hangry. You can understand, right?

Including famous quotes from history that give context to these disturbingly cute illustrations, Alex Solis shares his sense of humor while giving readers a way to enjoy the darkest parts of life with a smile.

It's time to give theses predators a break Because, in the end, both predators and their prey play a role. I mean, it's not their fault they were made this way They're just living off of instincts, doing what comes naturally to them. So rather than turning away from nature, let's celebrate all the animals who complete The Adorable Circle of Life.

Addison Talk

Hello, my name is Kevin and this is my wife, Kasey.

We are here today to let you in on a big secret. You can't tell anyone. It's top secret. Are you ready?

Are you sure? OK? Don't say I didn't warn you. Your life is never going to be the same....Cats are trying to take over the world!

Did you ever notice how terrible cats are at spelling?

Now, if you have a cat at home, you may have suspected this already.

This is our cat Gypsy, who stays at home all day. She's head of the Cat Board.

Have you heard of the Cat Board?

I'm not surprised if you haven't. It's a super-secret organization run by cats from around the world.

So, who is going to stand against this super-secret organization run from the shadows?

Why, the Totally Ninja Raccoons of course!

The Totally Ninja Raccoons have decided they are not meant to be ordinary bandits, but rather carry the potential to be something extraordinary--ninjas.

In the Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigfoot, the raccoons begin their ninja training, and meet their first potential employer--Gypsy the Cat. Yes, this Gypsy:

Gypsy sends the Raccoons on their first mission, to capture the elusive Bigfoot.

Things aren't what they seem to be. Bigfoot isn't a monstrous beast, as he's been portrayed. Gypsy isn't the benign employer. Cats want to take over the world, and it's up to the Ninja Raccoons to do something about it.

The Totally Ninja Raccoons learn that you have to choose your own path if you want to choose your destination.

I don't see any cats or ninjas around. So, I'm going to read you the first chapter of The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigoot. Don't tell Gypsy!

....read the first chapter

A furry head pops up from a trash can, the lid tilted on his head like a hat. It's a raccoon, and he's holding a box of Chinese takeout. "Someone ate all the pork out of this pork-fried rice, and there aren't any chopsticks!" says Kevin.

Now, you might not believe cats want to take over the world, or that there really are ninja raccoons, though I think we can all agree that Chinese food will make you hungry soon after you it it. I made up the story about the Ninja Raccoons. I created them with the power of my imagination. I'm a storyteller and a writer.

Well, maybe there are ninja raccoons...

I'm here to talk about the writing process. I've heard that you've done some fiction writing with your teachers. You've probably been told to "write what you know"....well, I write where I know, and I make the rest up. The Totally Ninja Raccoons are set where I live... Tioga County. You might recognize the front cover of The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigfoot as being at the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon just outside of Wellsboro Pennsylvania.

It's true that it is easier to write about something you know. Now, I don't personally know any raccoons, or if Bigfoot is real or not, but I know cats, and mine can be pretty bossy, especially around dinner time.

I like to joke and say the cats are in charge, or would like to be, but we all know that cats sleep a LOT.

Cats would love to be in charge, but they don't want to do all the work involved, and so they would have to find someone to do the hard work. Hmmm, who would cats hire?

Dogs already have jobs.

Monkeys want too much money...

and possums don't understand the question.

Why, raccoons would be perfect. They already have the masks and the skills to be ninjas.

...and the Totally Ninja Raccoons came to life! Ideas for stories are all around you!

Remember, the man with the broom called the Totally Ninja Raccoons "thieves" and "bandits"? The man had thrown his leftovers away. The food was fair game. The raccoons decide that they are not going to let someone else decide what they are. The raccoons can be anything they want. They already have the masks. They chose to be ninjas!

Have you ever had anyone call you something that you aren't, or tell you that you can't do something? Well, if raccoons can decide to be ninjas, then you can choose to be anything you want. Why, you can even chose to be a writer.

One of the great things about being a writer is that no one can stop you. No one can keep you from being a writer. You may not be tall enough to play professional basketball, but to be a writer, all you have to do is write.

There are books about everything, and you can write about anything you choose--ninja raccoons, giant chipmunks, that the pizza in the lunch room tried to eat your homework...

...anything. You don't even have to write a book. Do you love movies?

Movies have to be written. The actors need to be told what to say and do. It's called a screenplay, and somebody has to write it. Why not you? There are all kinds of writers. People who write directions on how to put a bookshelf together,

to what's on a cereal box...

.... to real life stories like who was George Washington, to how to best train puppies.

You can write about anything.

Yes, you can write about anything, but it doesn't mean that people will want to read it. I remember the first time I wrote something. It wasn't very good, but I kept writing. To be better at writing, you have to write, just like you get better at playing the piano by playing the piano.

Writing can be a lot of work. Once you write the story, a writer goes back and edits the story. You have to correct the mistakes, make sure words are spelled right, and that everything makes sense to the reader. There are people who have the job of making suggestions to writers, these are called editors, and sometimes make corrections the writer didn't catch, or make suggestions to make the story even better.

Writers can run into other problems. I love to write, and I wanted to write about ninja raccoons, but I knew the stories about the Totally Ninja Raccoons would be even better if there were pictures. I don't draw very well, but I didn't let that stop me. I have a friend who loves to draw and is great at art.

He was interested in drawing the Totally Ninja Raccoons. I described how I pictured the Totally Ninja Raccoons looking, and he helped create what the raccoon would look like.

Early Concept Art for the Totally Ninja Raccoons

He even added some of his own touches. It was his idea to give one of the raccoons a Mohawk haircut. I loved the idea.

The Totally Ninja Raccoons stories have them stopping the plots of the Cat Board, but they also come across many strange creatures in their adventures--such as werewolves!

Bigfoot!

Thunderbirds!

and unicorns!

What creatures do you think the Totally Ninja Raccoons should encounter next?

Take some suggestions from the crowd. Have Kasey write them down...

Oh, those are great suggestions. That will totally keep the Ninja Raccoons busy for a long time.

You can read all about the adventures the ninja raccoons have all ready had

and right now I am working on The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet The Little, Green Men. That should be out in September.

Do you have any questions for me about writing, raccoons, cats, Bigfoot or Chinese food?

Thanks for listening about the Totally Ninja Raccoons and remember The Cat Board won't rest until cats rule the world, but maybe just a little cat nap first...
