June 2010 newsletter

From My Shelf Newsletter: June 2010

News! *If you haven’t checked out the website recently, check in at some of the new things we’ve added! Of course, there’s always something new at the “Events” calendar link, but we’ve also added new photos, links to our youtube videos, and more! Don’t forget to visit the website every once in a while, since we’re always adding new & different content for you! In fact, go bookmark us now, at www.wellsborobookstore.com

*Punch cards: once again, we’ll be putting the “punch card” on summer hiatus – we won’t be punching any cards this summer, but, if you have a full punch card, you can still redeem it for $10 off a purchase at the store any time.

*We have added/changed our Wednesday special members’ sale! Wednesdays are now 25% off ALL children’s books, new or used, all summer long! Keep the kids reading: keep their minds sharp and your nerves intact by bringing them to the bookstore each week for high quality, great selection, reasonably-priced summer entertainment! And be sure to watch our calendar of events for a TON of great activities all summer long.

*In order to accommodate everyone who wants to trade books in this summer, we’re asking all of our members to (1)PLEASE schedule an appointment to bring your books in; during the summer we really can’t deal with drop-ins. If you are coming to Wellsboro from out of town, you still need to give us a call before you come. (2)Please bring only 10 books for your trade-in. If you have more than 10 books, you can schedule another appointment for later, or you could bring us the books you feel will earn you the most credit and donate the others on elsewhere.

Thanks for your understanding! If everyone sticks to the “10 books” and definitely scheduled program, then we can do have 2 people trade-in each day and have plenty of appointments to offer. When we get swamped, we get behind, and then the program gets too bogged down to accommodate all our members!

*Hobo will soon be making regular visits to the bookstore again!! We’ll be scheduling his “appearances” from 1 to 3pm most Saturday afternoons, beginning in June! Check the store events calendar to confirm.

*New merchandise at the store! We are now carrying beverages from the Pepsi Co. company, including cold Ocean Spray juices, Lipton iced teas, regular & diet sodas, Aquafina bottled water, and Starbucks cold coffee drinks in cans. We’re also proud to announce that we are co-op’ing with our fabulous local sweets-and-snacks company, Highland Chocolates! We have the famous chocolate barks in a huge variety of flavors, as well as small molded chocolates (especially cats) and their little snack mix packages. Highland Chocolates is a nonprofit company providing employment opportunity for area folks with developmental disabilities, and their pretzel bark is regionally famous!

Upcoming Events at the Bookstore: (see calendar on website for details)
*Friday, June 4th, 6 to 9pm: Game Night! “Open” game night, meaning we’ll play whatever you want to! Bring games you like, or show up and see what some of our regulars like to play. Free and open to the public.

*Friday, June 11th, 6 to 9pm: Game Night! This game night will focus on Heroclix, a miniatures strategy game featuring heroes and villains from DC and Marvel comics. If you’ve played before, bring a couple of your favorite teams; if not, here’s your chance to learn! This game is not difficult to learn, nor is it too expensive to begin playing. Plus, on Game Nights, Woolverine Games offers many extra discounts on starter sets and booster packets. ‘Clix not your style? Bring your own game to share, and we’ll play a board or card game with you. Free and open to the public.

*Sunday, June 13th: We’re open 11am to 3pm on Sundays now …. Stop in and see us, grab a cold drink, and watch Wellsboro’s famous Pet Parade meander down Main Street about 1:30pm. (Last year, Kasey couldn’t stop laughing at the “fainting goats”. Really. They exist. And they were right here on Main St.)

*Wednesday, June 16th: Moms! Join the women from our local MOPS (Mothers of Pre-schoolers) for a fun evening of light book discussion & light refreshments. Participants should try to read the first half of Irene Hannon's "Against All Odds", a Christian romantic thriller. We have this for sale at the bookstore on big discount for those participating. You need not be an official member of MOPS, just a woman, preferably a mom, who needs a night out to socialize a little with some other women! The second and final meeting for this book club event is Wed, July 14th.

*Wednesday, June 30th: the kick-off event for our ‘tween and teen book activities for this summer! Participants should be between the ages of 11 and 18. If necessary, we can divide into two smaller groups for any given activity. Please bring $3 to cover cost of pizza or snacks. For this first event, you’re asked to read a book on the theme of survival. Possible books include Hatchet (by Gary Paulsen); Julie of the Wolves (by Jean Craighead George); Island of the Blue Dolphins (by Scott O’Dell); Shipwreck: Island, Book 1 (by Gordon Korman); Alive: the Story of the Andes Survivors (by Piers Paul Read); Crazy for the Storm (by Norman Ollestad); Adrift (by Steven Callahan); Touching the Void (Joe Simpson); Life As We Knew It (Susan Beth Pfeffer). We have all of these books available at the bookstore, specially discounted if you are planning on joining us.

Michelle’s corner:
Author Katie MacAlister

The Aisling Grey, Guardian Series
The Dark Ones Series (vampires)
The Steampunk Series
The Dragon Series (people who change into dragons)
Plus many, many mysteries, AND romance – contemporary, paranormal, and/or historical

This month was difficult for me. I knew that I wanted to write about Katie MacAlister, but I couldn't decide what series to write about, so I'm just going to say, read them all! Katie is a fun, zany, quirky, crazy author. As you can see from the above list, whatever your cup of tea is, I guarantee you great laughs & a fun ride.

Okay, I would be remiss if I did not also tell the readers out there thatI also love the women in her books. Many of them are just average-looking and some have a little extra padding around the middle. Well that just excites me, doesn't it you? To know that some sexy, dark, brooding vampire might want to suck my blood and make me his Queen of the Night or a dragonman might throw me over his shoulder and make me his love slave even with my excess pounds... well that just gives a girl hope. Now I know what you’re going to say. Vampires and dragonmen are not real, but a girl can have her dreams, right? (picture me lifting my eyebrows up and down rapidly). Thanks Katie!

*Honors from ‘Bookazine’: Bookazine is a wholesale book company who specializes in taking good care of independent bookstores. Their special attention and personalized service make them to us what we are to you – set apart from larger companies because we take time to know our customers’ individual needs & to support our local communities. Bookazine has a fun home website that welcomes browsing from booklovers nationwide (you need to be a bookstore to log on to buy books there, but the book information at the home page is fun for all!) Bookazine has chosen our book blog, “Hobo’s Books”, to be their featured book review blog/website for the month! Go to www.bookazine.com to see us featured, and while you’re there, turn up the sound on your computer. Click on all the fun icons – the cat, the phone – and then click on the little TV that says “Living Room.” The TV there features short videos made by booksellers about their stores, their favorite books, new authors, etc. Notice that From My Shelf bookstore is now on one of the channels on the Bookazine “TV Guide” … showing everyone what a wonderful community we live in, and how much we at From My Shelf love you! Check back every couple of weeks, and we’ll have something new posted at the Bookazine ‘Living Room.’

Upcoming Events at the Bookstore:
(see calendar on website for details) www.wellsborobookstore.com

*Saturday, March 6th, 4 to 7pm: Woolverine Game Night, focusing more on games enjoyed by our ‘younger’ crowd: sometimes the featured games of the night are strategy games that are a bit too challenging for our youngest players. This Saturday we specifically welcome kids who play or collect Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or Bakugon cards and figures. Learn how to set up a deck to play your Pokemon cards, come trade your cards with other kids, or buy some here at extra-special game night discounts. We may play some other games, too, depending on who shows up and what they’d like to play – I have a couple of people wanting to play Pirates again – but this night is especially for our young players. Free & open to the public. Light refreshments served.

*Saturday, March 20th, 12 to 3pm: Double author event! We’re hosting Mike D’Aloisio, author of the “5 C Hero”, who coached local athlete-gone-pro, Joel Stephens. Coaching Joel, and knowing him throughout his struggle with cancer inspired Coach D’Aloisio to want to keep Joel’s story, his strength, his character, and especially his faith, alive. Come meet Mike, talk with Joel’s family, and learn why Joel was the example he is. At the same time, extend your welcome to Rachel Castellanos, Christian fiction author of “Gentle Forbearance”. Rachel’s book would be of great interest to those who love Janette Oke, Karen Kingsbury, the Love Inspired or Steeple Hill CafĂ© romances. Stop in and say ‘hi’, get a free T-shirt from KC101 … we’re having a live radio broadcast with Jenn Thomas of our favorite hometown country radio station!

Sunday, March 21st: Writing Seminar: Self-Publishing & Marketing Your Book: How to Get Started, What to Consider, Pitfalls to Avoid: facilitated by Kasey, featuring guest commentary by several successful writers who have self-published 1 to 4pm, at the bookstore
seminar cost: $15 (pre-registration highly recommended)

****Every week, we have people ask us how they might go about publishing a book they are writing. Inevitably, we get twice as many phone calls and emails from recently self-published authors, asking us if we will consider carrying their book in our bookstore. If you have written a book, or are considering writing a book, or have been told you should write a book about your area of expertise, perhaps self-publishing is for you. (It may not be; we’re happy to tell you that, too!) Find out what to find out, how to weigh different companies, what pros & cons exist, from local folks who have seen the self-publishing industry from both sides of the table – as booksellers who do work with self-published authors, but only under certain situations; and as self-published authors, ourselves, who want to share our mistakes & successes. Packet of info plus light refreshments included in seminar fee.

“Read it before you see it”:
*Dear Johnand/or The Last Song-- both by Nicholas Sparks
*Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
*Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll …. also, check out The Looking Glass Wars,
Seeing Redd, and/or Hatter M by Frank Beddor
*Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
*How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

And, on deck for this fall: an animated, family-friendly fantasy movie, “The Legend of the Guardians”, based on this series we’ve loved, “The Guardians of the Ga’hoole” by Kathryn Lasky. We always have this series in, and often have used copies (at least of the first several), so you can try it to see how much you’ll like it!

Discovering a New Author -- from Kevin

Waiting for the next book from your favorite author can feel like forever. That's why nothing beats that feeling of discovering a new writer with an established body of work. I recently read "Agent to the Stars" by John Scalzi and immediately ordered more for the bookstore and for myself. You can catch my review on our blog http://frommyshelf.blogspot.com . If you like old-school style sci-fi in the style of Robert Heinlein, yet adding twist and variations making the story truly his own, Scalzi is the new author for you, too!

Michelle's Corner

The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R. Ward:

Men. Big, bad, sexy, hunka hunka burn'in love men. Do I have your attention? Are you thinking, I want me one of those? Well, you need to read J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. This is the story of six vampire warriors who are charged with the guarding of their race, but their enemy, the Lessening, are always looking for ways to destroy them. Each book tells the story of one of the warriors. You won’t want to put them down once you begin. Start out and read the first book, which is Dark Lover. This tells the story of Wrath, the king of the vampire race, the most powerful and only full blooded vampire left on the planet. If you find you like these, then check out J.R.'s other series, called 'The Fallen Angels': in October she just released the first book called Covet.

Percy Jackson’s Valentine’s Quest: Sunday, Feb. 14th
SEE WEBSITE FOR TIME!

BACKGROUND: The bestselling young adult series, "Percy Jackson and the Olympians", by Rick Riordan, will debut as a movie on Friday, Feb. 12th. The first book, "The Lightning Thief", was made into a movie by 20th Century Fox, directed by Chris Columbus -- who directed such big box office hits like the first two Harry Potter movies, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and The Goonies. From the previews, it looks to handle the action scenes and special effects really well.

The books follow Percy Jackson, a seventh grade kid who has always had a hard time in school -- he's dyslexic, for one, and for some reason, trouble always seems to follow him. As the first book opens, one of his teachers turns into a monster (a Fury) and attacks him. His Ancient History teacher confesses: Percy is actually the son of one of the Gods of Olympus. Since Percy is Poseidon's son, Zeus believes that Poseidon asked Percy to steal his lightning bolt.... the bolt must be found soon, or there will be a war on Olympus.......

This is a great adventure story -- it's funny, smart, exciting. Kevin and Kasey both did reviews for the paper on these books and relevant Greek/Roman mythology books. (see our blog at http://frommyshelf.blogspot.com -- notice no “www” at beginning!) The series is fantastic, and if the movies are handled well, could have much of the same appeal as the Harry Potter series. So far, the five books in the series have remained on bestseller lists since the series debuted in 2005.

Bookstore & Community EVENT FOR THE MOVIE RELEASE: A Valentine’s Quest

The movie, "The Lightning Thief", opens in Wellsboro and nationwide on Friday, Feb. 12th. Join other Olympians at From My Shelf bookstore on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 14th to participate in some mythology games & activities, then venture with us to George's Restaurant for some real Greek food before we all go to a matinee showing of "The Lightning Thief". We'll have a Valentine's Adventure together in the name of Aphrodite!

Each person must pay his/her own way at George's and at the Arcadia, but each quest has a reward waiting! At From My Shelf, get gold coins to cross the River Styx and also enter contests to win prizes (sorry, though, no chariot racing in the store). At George's Restaurant, enjoy free drinks with your meal! There are lots of inexpensive choices at George’s and the chance to try some REAL Greek food – dolmades, moussaka, souvlaki, spanikopita, baklava. Then, at the Arcadia, if you bring a copy of one of the books from the "Percy Jackson" series, you get also get a free drink with your movie ticket.

Anyone who comes in costume to the bookstore gathering on Valentine's Day is entered to win one of our great mythology collections .... we'll draw for three books .... worth as much as $25. We'll also give smaller prizes to everyone in costume. Let's see some heroes and monsters ... Cerebus or the Cyclops, Zeus or Aphrodite. If you don’t know who to be, brush up your mythology!

Please join us for one, two or all three parts of our quest on Sunday, Feb. 14th. Also, any day over the period of time the movie is showing at the Arcadia, bring your used movie ticket to the bookstore for a 10% discount off any book in the "Percy Jackson series". Also, bring any book from the "Percy Jackson" series to the Arcadia when you buy your movie ticket, and receive a free small drink with your movie!

For details regarding specific times of events and/or cost of movie ticket, call us at 724-5793.

Read It Before You See It: from Kevin – I loved reading pulp fiction when growing up. Fast paced tales of Conan, the Cthulu mythos, Tarzan, and John Carter of Mars. If you haven't heard, Pixar Productions is working on John Carter of Mars for 2012, which is the 100th anniversary of the first book in the series, A Princess of Mars. 100 years later and this book is still in print, and in stock at From My Shelf Books, as well as many other books by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Hollywood loves a reboot, and there's going to be a reboot of the Conan saga originally written by Robert E. Howard, as well as a new movie of his lesser known characters, Solomon Kane. There are several books by Howard in the Conan series, but other authors have continued the adventures of this shrewd barbarian, including L. Sprague de Camp, and Robert Jordan. We have lots of Conan books in stock, though I haven't been able to locate any with the character Solomon Kane. I'm looking for those, and when they come back in print, I'll have some in.

Michelle’s corner: Meet Michelle!! Michelle is always right on top of the romance and paranormal romance section. She knows more about these authors, these series and the new releases than anyone else here, so we drafted her to give us a little insight each month.

Soulless, An Alexia Tarabotti Novel written by Gail Carriger
Alexia is a 25 year old soulless spinster who carries a specially-made umbrella as a weapon. She is considered unmarriageable due to her stubbornness and rather large nose. At a party, she is attacked by a vampire and has to kill him. This brings about an investigation led by the brawny Scottish Lord Maccon, who is also a werewolf. The two of them find themselves caught up in a mystery together. Can they figure out what’s happening to the vampires or will they just drive each other crazy?

I have to admit that just the name and the picture on the cover of this book captured my attention, but I am so glad it did! It’s such a fun, original combination of both the Victorian times and the paranormal -- two of my favorite genres. The characters have such great personalities; it’s filled with witty banter that keeps you chuckling or snorting (whatever you prefer to do). It’s a fast, fun read that I highly recommend. Good news too! The second in the series will be coming out March 30th. It is entitled Changeless.
