Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday is November 24th. Heard of it? It's a new shopping holiday created by a big business [American Express] that's supposed to focus on small business. See, Black Friday is all about the super deals and camping out at big box stores. Cyber Monday is all about shopping at home in your underwear. Small Business Saturday is supposed to focus on the little guy. That's nice, I guess.

I want to remind you, that at From My Shelf Books, we're here every day, not just during the mad rush of the holiday season. We'll help you find the perfect Christmas book for your 7 year old grandson, but we're here for his birthday in August too, or for that baby shower gift in May.

I could go over all the reasons to buy local. Money spent locally stays local. You help shape the character of your town. A small business is run by real people, with personality. People you know. Small businesses add flavor to a town, and you know that's more attractive than vacant stores.

I could tell you that it lowers your taxes. Local businesses generate more tax revenue per sales dollar, and the more local business, the lower your taxes will be. This has a multiplier effect and impact on local organization and residents.

Local business creates local jobs and opportunites. Independent businesses not only employ local people, but are the customers of local printers, accountants, craftsman, etc., and expand opportunities for more local entrepreneurs.

We live here, so we care about here. Small business donates twice as much per sales dollar to local non-profits and events compared to big business. We care about that road project, or if a local bridge gets fixed.

So, this Small Business Saturday, come visit us and see why we do what we do, but don't forget us the rest of the year, and we won't forget that you already bought that book for your daughter, or that that you always want the new Lee Child book. Don't forget small business doesn't run one day a year.

How to Get Signed and Personalized Books From Kevin Coolidge For the Holidays, 2018

Catmas is coming, and you can give the gift of a signed and personalized book at From My Shelf Bookss & Gifts. It’s a great way to get a unique gift for someone you love (even yourself!) while at the same time supporting a fabulous local business that does a fantastic job in its community.

So: How do you get signed and personalized books from me? It’s simple:

1. Call From My Shelf Books & Gifts at 570-724-5793 and let them know you’d like to order signed copies of my books. Please call rather than send e-mail; it's easier to keep track of things that way.

2. Tell them which books you would like, and what, if any, names you would like the book signed to. If there’s something specific you’d like written in the books let them know but for their sake and mine, please keep it short. Also, if you’re ordering the book as a gift, make sure you’re clear about whose name the book is being signed to. If this is unclear, I will avoid using a specific name.

3. Order any other books you might think you’d like, written by other people, because hey, you've already called a bookstore for books, and helping local independent bookstores is a good thing.

4. Give them your mailing address and billing information, etc.

5. And that’s it! Shortly thereafter I will sign your books for you.

If you want the books shipped for Christmas, the deadline for that is December 15 That way we can make sure everything ships to you on time.

Ordering early is encouraged — it makes sure we will absolutely be able to order your book and have it to you on time.

P Is for Pterodactyl: The Worst Alphabet Book Ever

Turning the traditional idea of an alphabet book on its head, P is for Pterodactyl is meant for anyone who has ever been stumped by silent letters or confused by homophones. It takes silent letter entries like "K is for Knight" a step further with "The noble knight's knife nicked the knave's knee." Illustrations provide context clues, and alliterative words help readers navigate text like "A bright white gnat is gnawing on my gnocchi."

Forest Life: Practical Meditations on Canoeing, Fishing, Hunting, and Bushcraft

Forest Life collects George Washington Sears' timeless writing about the joys of exploring the wilderness, edited for a modern audience. In text both practical and inspirational, Sears' provides enduring wisdom about trips into the woods and lakes, including equipment, campfires, fishing, camp cooking, traveling light, and canoes.

The original "forest bather," Sears wanted others to enjoy the woods as he did. His published Woodcraft in 1884 to help prepare skillful, self-reliant woodsman and to extol the restorative power of nature, writing "There are men who, on finding themselves alone in a pathless forest, become appalled, almost panic stricken. . . And there be some who plunge into an unbroken forest with a feeling of fresh, free, invigorating delight, as they might dash into a crisp ocean surf on a hot day." In addition to Woodcraft, Forest Life contains many of his articles from Forest and Stream, as well as his nature poetry.

Sears is especially eloquent about canoing, which he helped popularize with published tales of his adventures. In 1883, when he was 61 years old and suffering from tuberculosis, he used a 9-foot, 10-1/2 pound canoe to travel 266 miles through the Adirondacks, writing, "The easy, gentle rocking of the canoe was the best incentive to drowsiness I ever found, and by night or day was nearly certain to send me into dreamland. A score of times I have gone to sleep drifting on deep, wide water, to be awakened by the pressing and bumping of the little craft among the dead balsams and spruces that make [up] half the shorelines of all the lakes in the North Woods."

This two-color gift book, illustrated with period etchings of scenes, people, flora, and fauna of the Adirondacks, is the perfect gift book for the outdoor enthusiast. This handsome, affordable collection will be especially appealing to the millions who canoe, camp, and fish.

Born in 1821, George Washington Sears is renowned for his writing for Forest and Stream magazine, as well as publishing the classic camping guide Woodcraft in 1884 and his poetry collection Forest Runes in 1887. Writing under the pen name "Nessmuk," he helped popularize canoing, camping, and wilderness conservation, notably in the Adirondacks. He worked with pioneering boat builder J. Henry Rushton to create one of the first lightweight and affordable canoes, succeeding to such a degree that his boat Sairy Gamp was a featured exhibition at the Smithsonian. Upon his death, both a lake and a mountain in Pennsylvania were named in his honor.
