The search is on for the Totally Ninja Raccoons!

They will be hiding in 21 Wellsboro area businesses during July.

Every July for seven straight years, From My Shelf Books & Gifts at 7 East Avenue hosted the Candlewick Press search for Where’s Waldo, the publisher’s iconic cartoon character. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Candlewick canceled the 2020 hunt.

In response, the local bookstore owned by author Kevin Coolidge decided to host the “Where Are the Totally Ninja Raccoons” search based on Coolidge’s “Totally Ninja Raccoon” action series for 7 to 10-year-old reluctant readers. The series is about the three raccoon brothers who become ninjas.

The hunt for the brothers begins on Wednesday, July 1 at 9 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 30. This event gives both locals and tourists of all ages an opportunity to play.

Each participating business will have free passports, listing all of the businesses where searchers can find the Ninja Raccoons. When a customer spots the raccoons, the business will stamp or sign the passport.

All passports must be turned in at From My Shelf Books & Gifts no later than 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 30 for prize eligibility.

“Visiting kids sometimes worry about not having time to search at all 21 businesses,” said Kasey Coolidge, manager of From My Shelf Books. “We reassure them that everyone who plays has a chance to win prizes sponsored by the participating businesses.

“For each place you find the Ninja Raccoons and get your passport signed, your name goes on a ticket in the prize jar. We will draw for prizes at the Ninja Party on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Winners need not be present to win.”

Prizes include gift certificates to and items donated by participating businesses; a variety of books and Wellsboro Chamber bucks.

The Ninja Raccoons will be hiding in these businesses located in Wellsboro and surrounding townships: Café 1905 and Dunham’s Department Store; Wild Asaph Outfitters; C.S.

Sports; Peggy’s Candies & Gifts; In My Shoes; Garrison’s Men’s & Ladies Shop; Tioga Office Products; Highland Chocolates Factory; The Farmer’s Daughters; Karen’s Country Store; Tony’s Italian Cuisine; Wellsboro House Restaurant & Brewery; the Frog Hut; Pag-Omar Farms Market & Restaurant; CBJ Collective Gift Shop and Piano Studio; The Yellow Basket & Ice Cream Shop; Omi Of The Canyon; Wellsboro Mini Mall; Krout’s Creations and More; and From My Shelf Books & Gifts.

Hurry, Hurry, Read All About It

“Laurel Fest, Endless Mountain Music Festival, Hickory Fest, Where's Waldo--everything has been cancelled,” said Kevin Coolidge, owner of From My Shelf Books & Gifts at 7 East Avenue in Wellsboro. For seven straight years we’ve held ‘Where's Waldo’ in Wellsboro. Candlewick, the publisher cancelled this year’s July 1-31 Where’s Waldo and we can't do it without permission, but we can create a new event,” Coolidge said.

This July From My Shelf Books will hold "Where Are the Totally Ninja Raccoons." Twenty-four local businesses, those in downtown Wellsboro and surrounding areas, are invited to be Totally Ninja Raccoon hosts.

To be a "Totally Ninja Raccoon" location, businesses need to be open at least five days a week and provide a prize worth at least $10. Participating businesses will each get a cardboard "Totally Ninja Raccoon" figure to hide in their stores.

In July, searchers - youngsters and adults - will go to as many of the participating businesses as they can to look for the Totally Ninja Raccoons. Once a searcher finds them, someone at the business will stamp or sign the searcher’s passport.

Each Totally Ninja Raccoon searcher must turn in his/her passport to From My Shelf Books & Gifts by Friday, July 31. The bookstore will create a separate ticket with the searcher's name for each place he/she has found the raccoons and put all of those tickets in the bookstore’s prize jar.

Winners' names will be drawn from the prize jar during the wrap-up Totally Ninja Raccoon party at the bookstore on Saturday, Aug. 31. The more times a searcher’s name is in the bookstore’s jar based on the number of participating businesses he/she has visited in July, the higher that person’s chances are of winning a prize.

Businesses interested in being a "Where Are the Totally Ninja Raccoons" host are asked to call Kasey at From My Shelf Books & Gifts at 570-724-5793 soon.

We raised the goal on our GoFundMe today, because.... life.

UPDATE on our GoFundMe campaign:

Thank you all so much, for all your support, in the myriad of ways you've shown it. Thanks to you, we were able to send our landlord the check for the April rent.

When it rains, it pours, sadly. Life happens. I raised the amount on our goal today. In the last 24 hours, a chunk of glass dropped out of a cracked window that we were waiting on nicer weather to get fixed. Sure, we have glass insurance, but there was a sizable deductible, so when we put in the claim last fall, the insurance company wrote us a big $11 check. Now, it needs fixed immediately. Oh, and our car battery died this morning.

Normally, we can take care of our own expenses, but, as we all know, this is not a normal time.

Thanks for anything you can donate to keep us going through this time. Thanks to those who have already donated, and those who are shopping with us, and those who are sharing for us and cheering us on.

We love you! Stay well.

Opening to the Public

We will open to the public on Friday, May 8th, according to safety guidelines provided by the Governor's office, using the "yellow" level instructions.

From My Shelf Spring Rent

We received disappointing and scary news today: we found out the Small Business Disaster Loan website basically "lost" our application because we applied "too early", while the website was still unstable. After a long talk with apologetic folks manning the SBA helpline, I found out that we will need to reapply for disaster loan help, since the portal is currently closed to "new" applications.

My landlord would at least like to have a check for our April rent of $1500. We'd been hoping to have money for rent, utils, and other basic expenses soon, since we were right on the ball applying for SBA EIDL on March 29. While we have been doing a lot more online sales these past 3+ weeks, we're not making a lot of money, since shipping involves higher costs, with shipping materials like mailers, postage, tape, and is more labor-intensive.

We have been so grateful for all the friends, community members, and loyal customers who have offered support, and have continued ordering with us through this uncertain time. We are doing everything we can to make sure that we will continue to be a great independent bookstore throughout this crisis and beyond. From My Shelf and its staff want to commit to our ongoing presence as essential parts of this community. We appreciate everything you've done for us, and want to keep giving back to you.

Local Bookstore Cats Inducted into Feline Historical Society

Huck and Finn, the bookstore cats at From My Shelf Books and Gifts, have received new accolades. The hardest working cats in the book business have been inducted as honorary members of the Feline Historical Society.

The brothers along with 14 other cats from 12 bookstores across the United States were invited to join the society by Thunderstone books in celebration of Dan Greenburg's "The Only True Biography of Benjamin Franklin, Told by His Cat, Missy Hooper (with Hardly Any Help from Dan Greenburg)." This novel is for eight to twelve-year-old readers.

Huck, a black and white tuxedo cat, received an email from the publisher. The email made no mention of his brother, but Huck made sure the offer included Finn as well, but only after letting him know that he (Huck) is obviously the more famous of the two.

Huck and Finn are honored to be members of the cats-only society and very much enjoyed reading Greenburg's book with their tall cat, Kevin Coolidge.

Huck is now considering working on his mewoirs, but Finn is satisfied with the book he shares with his brother, "Huck & Finn, Bookstore Cats" and his cameos in The Totally Ninja Raccoon series and "Bookstore Cats."

Huck and Finn are available to help customers at From My Shelf Books in Wellsboro during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check out their Facebook page "Huck and Finn Bookstore Cats."

Kevin Coolidge, Children's Author, Presenter

Kevin Coolidge is not just the owner of From My Shelf Books & Gifts, he's also the author of twelve children's books and one fantastical adventure novella for adults. Kevin is available for school presentations from kindergarten to the 4th grade. Presentations include information on the writing process and encouraging fun in literacy.

He's also available for interviews across the media spectrum. He's especially good on the radio, and as a bookstore owner, he can talk books, bookstores, small business, literacy, and most aspects of popular culture, as well as discuss his books.

Kevin resides in Wellsboro, just a short hike from the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. When he's not writing, you can find him at the bookstore which he could not run without his lovely wife, several helpful employees, and two friendly bookstore cats, Huck & Finn.

He's recently become an honorary member of the Cat Board. When he's not scooping the litter box, taking out the garbage, or feeding Gypsy her tuna, he's writing more stories about the Totally Ninja Raccoons.

The Totally Ninja Raccoons is a series of early chapter books, target audience first through fourth grade. The books are specially structured to encourage reluctant readers. Short chapters, humor, adventure, and one picture per chapter keep kids feeling a sense of engagement and accomplishment as they plow through these stories and ask for more!

Each book has the Totally Ninja Raccoons encountering a cryptid — a creature from folklore or mythology, whose existence is not currently confirmed by modern science.

The first book in the series is The Totally Ninja Raccoons Meet Bigfoot. Although this first book establishes their origin story, the series can really be read in any order.

Julia Spencer-Fleming's new mystery: the wait is over!

About 3 years ago, I finally started reading Julia Spencer-Fleming's mysteries. My friend, Judith Sornberger, is a retired English professor from Mansfield University, and she had taught an upper-level seminar in women authors of mysteries. In this course, she taught the first in the Spencer-Fleming series, entitled "In the Bleak Midwinter." Someone had traded in a copy of this book, but it was in such well-loved shape that it wasn't really suitable for resale. I took it home to read.

At the time, there were 8 books in Russ Van Alstyne/Clare Fergusson series. I inhaled these books. To be honest, I don't usually read all the books in a series in one go: I mostly prefer to mix my authors and genres, so that my reading life isn't too formulaic. Didn't matter on this series. I wanted more, more, more of the story of this small town in upstate New York which so closely reflected life in our area. More of the story of Russ Van Alstyne, small town police chief, Vietnam vet, and his increasingly close relationship with the new Episcopal priest in town, a nontraditional woman who was a helicopter pilot and medic in the Army before going to seminary. I was so impressed with how Spencer-Fleming's books were able to capture the real human struggles behind issues taken right out of contemporary news headlines, even though the earliest books were written nearly 20 years ago.

So, I inhaled the books and then the series came to a screeching halt, leaving her audience on a cliffhanger. When would book #9 come out? Bad news, friends -- book 8 was released in 2014. Now what?

A little research showed that Julia Spencer-Fleming's beloved husband of 30 years, Ross Hugo-Vidal, died of cancer in Sept. 2017, within a year of his diagnosis. Julia found herself unable to move forward with the draft of book nine. She promised her fans she would get back to it as soon as she could, and asked for their patience.

Finally, my friends, the wait has paid off!!! Book Nine, "Hid From Our Eyes", releases in hardcover on April 7, 2020. If you are someone who has come to Julia Spencer-Fleming through our recommendations at From My Shelf, pre-order your copy for book nine with us! If you pre-pay, we can give you 30% off the suggested cover price of $27.99, making your copy $19.59 + PA sales tax. If you can't prepay, but would still like to pre-order to have a copy reserved for you, we can offer you 20% off cover price.

Send us an email, a Facebook private message, or call us at 570-724-5793. The game in Miller's Kill is afoot once again!

You Know What Gets My Goat?

You know what really gets my goat? Yeah, chupacabras*, damn chups. There's a reason why the government puts a bounty on them. Chupacabras are a menace to society.

The local Cryptid Hunter society was planning to submit Chupacabra Chow for the local chili cook off. Well, it was a great idea and it worked. It worked too well.

Chupacabras raided the compound and got into the goats, literally, sucked 'em dry. We are all out of goat. Part of being a chup hunter and a chef is improvising. So, the cook off is still on, however, we can't use goat.

If anyone local to the Wellsboro Pennsylvania can get us a couple pounds of goat meat, we'd love to still do it, otherwise, we'll use our favorite chupacabra recipe and continue our fight against the chups.

*chupacabra for those uninitiated means "goat sucker" in Spanish. If you don't know what a chupacabra is, you are welcome. We are doing our jobs.

Fall in Love at From My Shelf Books & Gifts

I was talking to a single friend of mine, and he was really discouraged. He's having a hard time meeting women. In the age of social media, people don't seem to leave their house. Where do you do to meet people?

I met my wife doing a play. I had entered a play writing contest, but did not win. I decided to be in a play to observe the inner workings more, and to get new ideas. My wife was in another of the plays. She also loved books and we ended up opening a bookstore together.

Are you Single? Is your dating pool not as deep as you'd like? Maybe you aren't into the bar scene. It can be hard to meet people. Sure, there's social media, but I mean really connect with someone.

At From My Shelf Books, we've already had several marriage proposals over the last decade, and we see many happy couples browse for books. Now it is your turn.

Visit From My Shelf Books February 14th from 6 to 8PM and meet other singles that love books. Everyone who loves books is welcome. From My Shelf Books East Ave Wellsboro. Love your local bookstore; we'll love you back. Love us on Facebook.

Kevin Will be at the Maryland Renaissance Festival in August

In August of 2019, I was a guest at Children's Weekend at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. It was a LOT of fun. If you've never been, I heartily recommend it, and I've been officially asked back for 2020.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival has become the region's premier outdoor event and the second largest Renaissance Festival in the country. Since the Festival's first season as a ramshackle village in 1977, the event has matured into a large theme show with more than 1,300 participants and 280,000 guests per season.

There are several themed weekends, and I'll be attending Children's Weekend August 29th and 30th. Kids 15 and under, with an accompanying adult ticket purchased, are admitted free. CHILDREN UNDER 15 DO NOT NEED A TICKET FOR August 29th & 30th.

I can't wait for this great event. In addition to signing books, I watched jousting, threw axes, and drank mead. This is a really child friendly festival with a lot of fun activities for children to participate.

If you can't wait until August to meet me, I can be found most days at From My Shelf Books & Gifts. I also do several events a year and post those events to my Facebook page. I also love doing school events. If you are interested, contact me.

The "Captain Underpants" of Wellsboro Pennsylvania

I enjoy being an author that is also a bookseller. I used that skill to write books for children that they enjoy. I also get to meet my readers. Children and adults sometimes forget that there's a real person behind the book.

I share some of the same readers as the better known Dav Pilkey. He's the creator of such characters as Dog Man, Cat Kid, and Captain Underpants. So, I took it as quite the compliment when a young reader called the Totally Ninja Raccoons as the "Captain Underpants" of Wellsboro.

The Totally Ninja Raccoons is a series of early chapter books, target audience first through fourth grade. The books are short adventures with quick chapters, specially structured to encourage reluctant readers. Each book has the Totally Ninja Raccoons encountering a cryptid -- a creature from folklore or mythology, whose existence is not currently confirmed by modern science.

The "monsters" are presented in a fun, not-too-scary way, and readers are encouraged to do their own research to make up their minds about the possible existence of Bigfoot, werewolves, thunderbirds, sidehill gougers, the Loch Ness monster, and more. The child in your life will plow through these and ask for more.

The books are all available at From My Shelf Books in Wellsboro PA, and you can meet me there. I'll happily autograph the books and personalize them as well. It is the digital age, so you can buy the books online at the store's website, or ask your favorite hometown bookstore to order them. You'll be glad you did.

I'm Donating $1 from Every Totally Ninja Raccoon

You've seen photos of the Australian fires. It's overwhelming. Australia has animal species found nowhere else, and they are being pushed to extinction. Australia is a world away from Pennsylvania, but I still want to help.

I read how crafters got out their tools and started hand-knitting pouches for baby kangaroos and wallabies. That's great, but I'm no knitter. What could I do?

I read how Chris Helmsworth, Russell Crowe, Elton John, and Metallica donated hundreds of thousands of dollars. I'm not a famous actor or singer. What could I do?

I read how young, attractive Instagram models sold nude photos and donated the proceeds. Well, people aren't going to pay to see that, and besides I'm a children's author.

That's it. I'm donating my royalties from every Totally Ninja Raccoon I sell in January to the Animal Australia organization. I've already started and counted the ones I've sold this month. My royalties on each book is a little less than than a dollar, but I'm rounding up for good measure and the math is easier.

The books can be purchased at From My Shelf Books & Gifts in Wellsboro. The store does sell the books on their website, and all books come autographed. It's said that no person, or raccoon is too small to make a difference.

Your Chance to be a Ninja

The Totally Ninja Raccoons want to help their animal friends in Australia. You can help too. Here's your chance to be a ninja.

For every Totally Ninja Raccoon book sold in the month of January, I will donate $1 to Animals Australia.

The Totally Ninja Raccoons can be purchased at From My Shelf Books & Gifts in Wellsboro, or online at our website

Animals Australia is Australia's leading animal protection organization. You can read more about them here
