In Search of Sasquatch
What is Sasquatch? Thousands of people believe in it. Hundreds say they have seen it. But the
mystery of Sasquatch has not been solved . . .
Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot, is a cryptid—a creature of cryptozoology. Cryptozoology is the study of creatures not recognized by traditional science, and it is the quest to understand things that cannot be proven via ordinary channels. Kelly Milner Halls interviews cryptozoologists, linguistics experts, anthropologists, biologists, and regular people like us who have seen, heard, or maybe stumbled across evidence leading them to believe that Sasquatch is real. Serious Sasquatch seekers are as skeptical as unbelievers. They are not out to collect great stories. They are out to put together facts. The difference is, they are willing to keep an open mind. Do you believe in Sasquatch?

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
Releases Today July 29
On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane's bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.
The lieutenant's name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he'd been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.
Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.
In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in "Seabiscuit." Telling an unforgettable story of a man's journey into extremity, "Unbroken" is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.
Hailed as the top nonfiction book of the year by "Time" magazine - Winner of the "Los Angeles Times" Book Prize for biography and the Indies Choice Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year award

Three Men Seeking Monsters: Six Weeks in Pursuit of Werewolves, Lake Monsters, Giant Cats, Ghostly Devil Dogs, and Ape-Men
They sought out the strange.
They investigated the inexplicable.
They had one hell of a hangover.
On an odyssey of oddities that would take them all to the very limits of their imagination (and inebriation), bestselling author Nick Redfern teamed up with professional monster-hunters Jonathan Downes and Richard Freeman. For six weeks in the summer of 2001, the intrepid-yet-hard-partying trio rampaged across the remote wilds of Great Britain in hot pursuit of werewolves, lake monsters, giant cats, ghostly devil dogs, and ape-men. Their adventures led them deep into ancient forests, into the dark corridors of a mansion hiding a wild man, and to the shores of the legendary Loch Ness -- along the way encountering all manner of curious characters, including witches, government agents, and eyewitnesses who claim to have seen monsters firsthand. And only at journey's end did the hard questions posed at the start of their quest begin to reveal some mind-bending answers. That monsters truly do exist in our world. And that we are responsible for their existence!
Whether you're seeking a glimpse into the bizarre reaches of reality, or just looking for a good time, Three Men Seeking Monsters is a uniquely gonzo trek with a trio of adventurers who pushed themselves to the edge -- and went right over it.

Cryptid: The Lost Legacy of Lewis & Clark
The line between history and legend can be deceptively thintoo thin, perhaps, to maintain the claim that one is exclusively fact and one fiction. Such may be the case with the history of Lewis and Clarkfor the fact is that two hundred years after they were handpicked by Thomas Jefferson to lead an extraordinary expedition to the Pacific coast, legends still persist regarding unexplained gaps in the explorers field journals. Call it legend, call it history, Cryptid tells the riveting story of conspiracy theorists who have new evidence of a centuries-old cover-up. When a cryptozoologist, a paleontologist, and a Jefferson descendant begin connecting the dots, they threaten to do more than unveil the well-guarded scientific discovery that lies at the heart of the ancient secret; they threaten to rewrite American history. That is, if they can survive a conspiracy that dates back to the Founding Fathersthe very same one that haunted Lewis to his grave. It may be that one of our nations first secrets is still being kept. Cryptid illustrates how the act of seeking the truth can be the very element that destroys it. Two centuries in the making, Cryptid is the final chapter of the Lewis and Clark story. And, as with any good tale, the best secrets have been kept until the end. Scientists race to discover the truth behind Gigantopithecus, aka Bigfoot, before a mysterious group eliminates all traces of its existence. Paleontologist Samantha Russell has spent most of her life searching for remains of a giant ape about which very little is known, due in large part to a paucity of fossils. After another disappointing dig, she receives a package containing a bone. The plot and writing provide genuinethrills All of the ingredients of a taut thriller are here -Kirkus Discoveries

I vow to never let this happen. I will eat more bacon. Don't let them gain that foothold. Do not be an irresponsible human. Eat more bacon! Need more convincing? Read Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Close to Shore: The Terrifying Shark Attacks of 1916
Combining rich historical detail and a harrowing, pulse-pounding narrative, Close to Shore brilliantly re-creates the summer of 1916, when a rogue Great White shark attacked swimmers along the New Jersey shore, triggering mass hysteria and launching the most extensive shark hunt in history.
During the summer before the United States entered World War I, when ocean swimming was just becoming popular and luxurious Jersey Shore resorts were thriving as a chic playland for an opulent yet still innocent era's new leisure class, Americans were abruptly introduced to the terror of sharks. In July 1916 a lone Great White left its usual deep-ocean habitat and headed in the direction of the New Jersey shoreline. There, near the towns of Beach Haven and Spring Lake-and, incredibly, a farming community eleven miles inland-the most ferocious and unpredictable of predators began a deadly rampage: the first shark attacks on swimmers in U.S. history.
For Americans celebrating an astoundingly prosperous epoch much like our own, fueled by the wizardry of revolutionary inventions, the arrival of this violent predator symbolized the limits of mankind's power against nature.
Interweaving a vivid portrait of the era and meticulously drawn characters with chilling accounts of the shark's five attacks and the frenzied hunt that ensued, Michael Capuzzo has created a nonfiction historical thriller with the texture of Ragtime and the tension of Jaws. From the unnerving inevitability of the first attack on the esteemed son of a prosperous Philadelphia physician to the spine-tingling moment when a farm boy swimming in Matawan Creek feels the sandpaper-like skin of the passing shark, Close to Shore is an undeniably gripping saga.
Heightening the drama are stories of the resulting panic in the citizenry, press and politicians, and of colorful personalities such as Herman Oelrichs, a flamboyant millionaire who made a bet that a shark was no match for a man (and set out to prove it); Museum of Natural History ichthyologist John Treadwell Nichols, faced with the challenge of stopping a mythic sea creature about which little was known; and, most memorable, the rogue Great White itself moving through a world that couldn't conceive of either its destructive power or its moral right to destroy.
Scrupulously researched and superbly written, Close to Shore brings to life a breathtaking, pivotal moment in American history. Masterfully written and suffused with fascinating period detail and insights into the science and behavior of sharks, Close to Shore recounts a breathtaking, pivotal moment in American history with startling immediacy.

Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments

In Elephants on Acid, Alex Boese reveals to readers the results of not only this scientific trial but of scores of other outrageous, amusing, and provocative experiments found in the files of modern science.
Why can’t people tickle themselves? Would the average dog summon help in an emergency? Will babies instinctually pick a well-balanced diet? Is it possible to restore life to the dead? Read Elephants on Acid and find out!

Roman Soldier vs Germanic Warrior: 1st Century AD
From the annals of Tacitus we get a one-sided vision of the Romano-Germanic wars. More recent scholarship, including Osprey's Teutoburg Forest Campaign book, paints a more balanced picture. Yet, there's still a lot of ground to cover on the subject.
The reigns of Augustus and his successor Tiberius saw an epic struggle between the Romans and local peoples for the territory between the Rhine and Elbe rivers in what is now Germany. Following two decades of Roman occupation, Germania Magna erupted into revolt in AD 9 following the loss of the three legions commanded by Publius Quinctilius Varus to the Cheruscan nobleman Arminius and an alliance of Germanic nations in the dense forests of the Teutoburger Wald. The Romans' initial panic subsided as it became clear that Arminius and his allies could not continue the war into Germania Inferior on the western bank of the Rhine, and Imperial troops poured into the region as the Romans decided how best to resolve the situation.
In AD 14 Tiberius' adopted son, Germanicus Caesar, quelled a mutiny among Roman forces in the area, then took his men on a quick punitive raid into Germanic territory. In the following year he snatched the wife and father-in-law of Arminius and located the site of the 'Varian Disaster', where he oversaw burial of the bones of Roman dead and erected a cenotaph. In AD 16 Germanicus set out to engage his Cheruscan adversary and defeat him decisively with a view to tipping the balance of power in the region as a prelude to restoring full Roman control over territory between the Rhine and the Elbe.
By that summer, the Germanicus had tracked down Arminius to a location on the Weser River in the region of modern-day Minden. An initial engagement - called the battle of Weser River - ended in a draw when a Roman cavalry charge was repulsed by Arminius' own cavalry and Germanicus withdrew his men. Having transferred his force across the river and camped for the night, he laid out a plan for a set-piece battle with his opponent at a place called the Plain of Idistaviso.
Idistaviso was the first battle the Romans won against Arminius since Teutoburg. It proved they could beat him. Despite his unique understanding of both Roman and Germanic strategy and tactics, Arminius' failure to anticipate the Roman defence in depth, compounded by dissimilarities in arms and equipment, and confusion on the ground, made this battle particularly vicious and bloody. Better led and disciplined, and with a robust battle strategy, Germanicus' men decisively defeated Arminius'. At the ensuing battle of the Angrivarian Wall the Romans crushed the Germans again.
Featuring full-color artwork, specially drawn maps and an array of revealing illustrations depicting weapons, equipment, key locations and personalities, this study offers key insights into the tactics, leadership, combat performance, and subsequent reputations of the Roman soldiers and their Germanic opponents pitched into a series of pivotal actions on the Imperial frontier that would influence Roman/German relations for decades to come.

The Faces of From My Shelf Books Vs The Evil Empire: Huck the Cat
Books and cats, they just seem to go together. A good bookstore has a cat, and From My Shelf Books has two. Meet the younger of our two boys, Huck. Huck came from a hoarding situation and we don’t know how old he is though the veterinarian estimates he’s about nine months. We adopted him along with his brother, Finn, from the Animal Care Sanctuary in Wellsboro.
When Bill and Kevin began writing “From My Shelf Books Vs. The Evil Empire” they knew they’d have to include kitties. The show is a web series which means it’s viewed on the internet, and everyone knows the internet is all about cats. Hobo, our first bookstore cat is mentioned in the first two episodes, we still miss him/
Huck and Finn will be introduced in episode three which is currently being filmed. Huck is the more energetic of our cats and isn’t known for his patience. He actually snuck into the opening scene of the first episode. We’re calling it a kitty cameo, but Huck insists it’s foreshadowing. See if you can spot him.
Huck and Finn live at From My Shelf Books, and you can visit them anytime we are open. Stop by and meet the real stars of the show, at least according to the kitties...

Ghosts of Penn's Woods
"Those who enjoy tales of ghosts and the places they haunt will enjoy this volume of ghostly encounters. Particularly since the charm of the stories included ... is enhanced by the fact that most of them come directly from those who experienced them, rather than from a second-hand source. Moreover, the accounts are centered in and around Pennsylvania's State Parks and historic sites, which in and by themselves offer attractions of their own for lovers of the outdoors and the state's historical heritage."
For Friends of From My Shelf Books Vs. The Evil Empire
Have you heard about the new web series From My Shelf Books Vs. The Evil Empire? It's set in Wellsboro Pennsylvania and focuses on a small, independent bookstore and the surrounding community.
It's a passion project that started with Kevin Coolidge, owner of From My Shelf Books and his friend Bill Robertson, back from California. Kevin knows about working in a bookstore and Bill knows how to write a script, and together the show came to life.
There isn't much of a budget for the show. Kevin jokes that the first two episodes were down for under $20, with most of that being spent on black, spray paint and the figure that would become the bibliofiend. Of course, it's not completely true. There was a lot of local talent to tap into.
Patricia Ritter already had experience with a camera, and more importantly she had one. We have a cheap microphone that we turned into a boom mike, and Marie Leddy Andrews is a makeup consultant and has skill with the brush(she's responsible for the dark circles under Kevin's eyes) So, though our cash flow is low, we don't lack resources.
We could, however, deliver a better quality show with your help.
Your donation of
$5 will show your love and appreciation and buy our cast and crew some creative-fueling coffee
$10 will bring some light to the subjects and give us some lighting support
$15 Will make us sound better and help provide better audio support
$20-25 will help us obtain better lighting equipment.
35$ will give us a studio lighting kit for a professional and clear picture
60$ Will give us equipment to fight white noise, wind sounds, and annoying garble.
We hope you are enjoying the show. We appreciate your support, and if times are a little tight, hey just share us with your friends.
Remember, this is a community based show. If you, or your business wants to be a part of the action, just let us know. There are parts in front of the camera or behind the scenes. If you are uncomfortable speaking on camera, you can always be an extra.
You can stop the store and donate in person, send a donation through Paypal using the email from_my_shelf@yahoo.com, call the store with your credit card information(we don't keep credit card information) at (570)724-5793, or send a check to:

Preparing the Ghost: An Essay Concerning the Giant Squid and Its First Photographer
Moses Harvey was the eccentric Newfoundland reverend and amateur naturalist who first photographed the near-mythic giant squid in 1874, draping it over a shower curtain rod to display its magnitude. In Preparing the Ghost, what begins as Moses s story becomes much more, as fellow squid-enthusiast Matthew Gavin Frank boldly winds his narrative tentacles around history, creative nonfiction, science, memoir, and meditations about the interrelated nature of them all.
In a full-hearted, lyrical style reminiscent of Geoff Dyer, Frank weaves in playful forays about his research trip to Moses s Newfoundland home, Frank s own childhood and family history, and a catalog of bizarre facts and lists that recall Melville s story of obsession with another deep-sea dwelling leviathan. Though Frank is armed with impressive research, what he can t know about Harvey he fictionalizes, quite explicitly, as a way of both illuminating the scene and exploring his central theme: the big, beautiful human impulse to obsess."

The Faces of From My Shelf Books Vs. The Evil Empire: Monique Canniere
We are focused on community here at From My Shelf Books. My wife and I have strived to grow the type of bookstore that we wish were here when we were growing up. That’s one reason I’m so excited about our new web series “From My Shelf Books Vs. The Evil Empire”
I love watching or reading about a place I’ve visited personally, and there is nowhere I know better than Wellsboro. The show is set right here in Wellsboro, using local talent from the writing to the makeup to the music. Speaking of music, I want to talk about the hometown woman who scored the show.
Monique Canniere currently lives in the city of brotherly love (that’s Philadelphia, of course), but she’s from Gaines, PA. You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of her heart and you can hear it in her music.
Monique Canniere has established herself as an active performing artist and composer in many styles and genres in the Philadelphia area since moving there from Gaines in 2004. She holds her BM in Violin/Voice Performance from Mansfield University, and her MM in Performance/Jazz Studies from University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
Primarily known as a singer, violinist, and pianist, Monique has appeared in several of Philadelphia's most prestigious venues, and has toured various places along the East Coast with different projects. Monique is finishing her first full-length solo album, "Preachin' to the Choir," to be followed by a multimedia/theatrical performance project titled, "About Time."
Monique is a featured soprano in the chancel choir of the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and is principal "vocalinist" and a composer for The Divine Hand Ensemble. She also performs regularly with the Jim Stephens Full Tilt Boogie Band (a funk band) and Vox Ama Deus (a classical chamber orchestra).
Monique has also had extensive training and experience in theater, dance, and film, and has appeared in lead and supporting roles for several musicals, plays, and film projects. As a composer, one of her favorite genres is film music, and she has let us know that she “is very excited and honored to be a part of "From My Shelf vs. The Evil Empire." Monique is always ready for a new adventure, and that's one of the many reasons we are excited to have her as part of the show.

Monster Hunter: Nemesis
Kevin Coolidge
I'm thrilled to be able to say that Larry Correia's new book Monster Hunter: Nemesis comes out today. It's the 5th in the series. It's just a couple years ago I discovered Monster Hunter International, the first in this series.
It turns out that monsters are real, and that's why I found myself devouring Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia. Creatures from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there. Lurking in the shadows, seeking our destruction, or just plain hungry. Monster Hunter International is the number one agency for eradication of evil.
Larry went from self-publishing his first book, being picked up by Baen publishing, to being a best selling author, and this year he has been nominated for a Hugo, one of the best known prizes in science fiction and fantasy. Larry is a great writer and he's a great guy. I'm looking forward to reading the next adrenalin fueled fun read...
