Teen Book Club: From 1900-1950

For our teen book club meeting on Thursday, May 19th, from 3:30-5pm, we're looking at an interesting slice of the book population: we'll all choose a book either WRITTEN between 1900 and 1950, OR a historical fiction book that takes place between 1900 and 1950.

As a guideline, this means you could choose any book about the sinking of the Titanic; World War I; the Great Depression; the Jazz Age; or World War II, and be easily within this month's category.

I started to dig a little deeper for suggestions, and found that there are HUNDREDS of choices.

Here are just a few books that were written during the first half of the 20th century:

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz [Baum] 1900
Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm [Wiggin] 1904
Peter Pan (the original!) [Barry] 1904
Anne of Green Gables [Montgomery] 1908
The Secret Garden [Burnett] 1911
Little House in the Big Woods [Wilder] 1932
Mary Poppins [Travers] 1934
The Hobbit [Tolkien] 1937
The Fellowship of Ring [Tolkien] 1943
The Little Prince [St-Exupery]
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe [Lewis] 1950
Misty of Chincoteague [Henry] 1947
Henry Huggins [Cleary] 1950
The War of the Worlds [Wells] 1898 -- okay, so I stretched the years a little
The Call of the Wild [London]
Riders of the Purple Sage [Grey]
The Great Gatsby [Fitzgerald] 1925
How to Win Friends & Influence People [Carnegie] 1936
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn [Smith] 1943
Johnny Tremain [Forbes] 1943
Pippi Longstocking [Lindgren] 1950
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl [Frank] -- written in the 1940s

AND, now, there are SO MANY AWESOME books, and young adult books, that cover this period in history! Really, there are thousands to choose from. Here are a few historical/historical fiction books where the story takes place between 1900 and 1950:

A Northern Light [Donnelly]
Death-Struck Year [Lucier]
The Diviners [Bray]
Bright Young Things [Godbersen]
The Berlin Boxing Club [Sharenow]
The Girl in the Blue Coat [Hesse]
The Book Thief [Zusak]
A Year Down Yonder [Peck]
Code Name Verity [Wein]
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children [Riggs]
The Big Burn [Ingold]
Nothing to Fear [Koller]
Al Capone Does My Shirts [Choldenko]
