What would I do if I WON the bookstore? *THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX*

As more people hear about our essay contest to become the new owner of From My Shelf Books & Gifts(see https://wellsborobookstore.indielite.org/write-essay-win-bookstore for more information), they tell us it's an "interesting idea", but many believe it's not for them because of any of the following:

1. they're too old
2. they're too young
3. they haven't got a lot of business experience
4. they already have a job
5. they don't want to work every day
6. they wouldn't know how to run a bookstore
7. they're not good writers
8. they'd have to move to Wellsboro
9. they'd have to wear matching socks every day
10. their glove compartment ran out of gloves

Let me encourage YOU (yes, YOU!!!) to start thinking outside the box and beyond these reasons (ie. excuses).

Over the next few months especially, on the blog and on our facebook page, we'll be posting ways for you to think about this bookstore opportunity in a whole new way.

Let's say for a minute you entered the essay contest. You write your essay; you let a bunch of your trusted friends and family read over it and make suggestions; you read over the instructions one more time, and you send in your two SASEs, your $75, and your essay. And, then, a few months go by, and suddenly it's spring 2018, and ... what if?? What if you got the notice that YOU WON THE ESSAY CONTEST?!?! YOU ARE THE WINNER OF THE "WRITE AN ESSAY, WIN A BOOKSTORE" CONTEST!

What then?

Well, if you were to win, consider this:

To respond to #1, (as well as possibly #4 and #5, and maybe #6 and #8, too, while we're at it....): Who says you're too old? People own businesses in their nineties! They can will them on as part of their estate. It becomes an asset you own.

Who says you have to be here every day? Who says that working at the bookstore will become your daily job or obligation? You, as the business owner, can be as involved as you want to be with the daily business of the store. Consider your essay and the entry fee as an investment, like diversifying your stock portfolio. A lot of stock costs a lot more for fewer returns and/or more risk. You can own a BUSINESS that has had eleven years of success despite many odds. You'll own it free and clear, so the risks that the original owners took to build the business are NOT your financial risks. The payoff for you can be sweet, in so many ways. Hire a good business manager, the way you'd hire someone to take care of your real estate rental properties or your stock portfolio, and ask for regular profit and loss statements. We think you'll be pleased.

Tune in again soon ;) for more ways to see how focusing on the numbered list (ie. excuses) above keep you in a small box and away from a great opportunity.

Why not sit down and just mess around with the essay question? 250 words isn't much at all. Why do you think a bookstore is important to a community?

Dunkirk: The History Behind the Major Motion Picture

THE EPIC TRUE STORY OF DUNKIRK--NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE, WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, AND STARRING KENNETH BRANAGH, TOM HARDY, AND MARK RYLANCE

The Battle of Dunkirk, in May/June 1940, is remembered as a stunning defeat, yet a major victory as well. The Nazis had beaten back the Allies and pushed them across France to the northern port of Dunkirk. In the ultimate race against time, more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were daringly evacuated across the Channel. This moment of German aggression was used by Winston Churchill as a call to Franklin Roosevelt to enter the war. Now, historian Joshua Levine explores the real lives of those soldiers, bombed and strafed on the beaches for days on end, without food or ammunition; the civilians whose boats were overloaded; the airmen who risked their lives to buy their companions on the ground precious time; and those who did not escape.

The Little Ships: The Heroic Rescue at Dunkirk in World War II

In May of 1940 -- the early days of World War II -- half a million British and French soldiers were trapped in France. Weak and wounded, they needed aid. Help came in the form of countless small craft, steered by brave young men, in the legendary armada of "little ships" that sailed aross the English Channel. Many people wanted to be a part of the rescue mission. Here is the story of a girl who was so determined to help that she disguised herself as a boy to blend in with the men as they sailed toward Dunkirk.

Win a Bookstore!!

After many years of running a successful bookstore in Wellsboro, a local couple is ready to move on to new pursuits. But they're not selling their bookstore using traditional methods. They're offering one person the chance to win a bookstore for $75.

Kevin and Kasey Coolidge started From My Shelf Books & Gifts in their hometown in 2006. It was their dream to give Wellsboro a bookstore with both new and used books.

"It's been a fun, learning experience," said Kevin. "Now, I'm writing on a regular basis and have started doing author visits to schools. My children's series, "The Totally Ninja Raccoons" is taking off and we have agreed that it is time for the next phase of our life," he added.

The contest is simple. Contestants pay a $75 entry fee and write a 250-word essay on why a bookstore is important to a community.

"We need 4,000 entries in our contest to cover inventory, shelves, signage and six months of paid rent to the winner," Kevin said.

Entries must be postmarked by March 31, 2018. "We do hold the right to extend the deadline for 60 days depending on the number of entries received by then," he noted.

"What booklover wouldn't want their own bookstore?" said Kevin. "If it has always been your dream, this is your chance."

If 4,000 people enter the contest, Kevin and Kasey will select the top 20. Then a panel of impartial judges will choose a winner. “For $75 and an essay, you could win your own bookstore,” Kevin said.

If 4,00 entries are not received, all entry fees will be returned, and the couple will continue to run the bookstore.

For the list of rules and an entry form, just check out From My Shelf Books & Gifts website at www.wellsborobookstore.com or the store's Facebook.

Win a Bookstore

After many years of running a successful bookstore in Wellsboro, a local couple is ready to move on to new pursuits. But they're not selling their bookstore using a traditional method. They're offering one person the chance to win a bookstore for $75.

Kevin and Kasey Coolidge started From My Shelf Books & Gifts in their hometown in 2006. It was their dream to give Wellsboro a bookstore with both new and used books.

"There wasn't a bookstore in Wellsboro when I was growing up, and there wasn't one when I met Kasey," said Kevin. Both Kevin and Kasey were selling books part-time when they met. They merged inventories and soon outgrew their apartment. When space opened up downtown, they decided to take the leap to retail.

"It's been a fun, learning experience," said Kevin. "Now, I'm writing on a regular basis and have started doing author visits to schools. My children's series, "The Totally Ninja Raccoons" is taking off and we have agreed that It is time for the next phase of our life," he added.

During the 11 years that Kevin and Kasey have operated the Wellsboro bookstore, they've developed a clientele that goes beyond loyalty; the store is part of the community and friends have become family. A regular customer even proposed marriage to his sweetheart there.

Rather than liquidate the stock, the couple decided that Wellsboro needs a bookstore, and asked themselves why someone else should have to start from scratch.

"My husband and I grew up here, and Wellsboro deserves a bookstore," said Kasey. "Kevin thought it would be nice to be able to pay it forward and give someone else the opportunity, especially since starting a business is hard."

The contest is simple. Contestants pay a $75 entry fee and write a 250-word essay on why a bookstore is important to a community.

"We need to at least 4,000 entries in our contest to cover our current inventory, shelves, signage and six months of paid rent," Kevin said.

Entries must be postmarked by March 31, 2018. "We do hold the right to extend the deadline for 60 days depending on the number of entries received by then," he noted.

"It may sound like a lot, but people who love books tend to be writers, and what booklover wouldn't want their own bookstore," said Kevin. "If it has always been your dream to own a bookstore, this is your chance. You don't have to run it like we do. It can be your own thing - your dream come true."

If 4,000 people enter the contest, Kevin and Kasey will select the top 20. Then a panel of impartial judges will choose a winner. “For $75 and an essay, someone could win their own bookstore,” Kevin said.

If 4,000 entries are not received, all entry fees will be returned, and the couple will continue to run the bookstore.

Write An Essay, Win a Bookstore!

If 4,00 entries are not received, all entry fees will be returned, and the couple will continue to run the bookstore.

Suburban Junky: From Honor Roll to Heroin Addict

An estimated 150,000 people per year try heroin, most of them are under the age of 26 and relative newbies to drugs. The stories of those within these jaw-dropping numbers are the tether needed to wrap our collective minds around this problem. Author Jude Hassan's memoir, Suburban Junky: From Honor Roll, to Heroin Addict, is a personal account of his journey from a smart, well-loved kid with great potential to a fear-filled addict and how he found his way back.

In Suburban Junky, Hassan was the last kid anyone would imagine a junkie. He had loving and attentive parents, was a great student, his father was a drug counselor; he knew all he was supposed to know. When his family moved to the suburbs just in time for freshman year, Hassan was more lonely than ever, shy and eating lunch alone. When a boy his age finally approached him and offered him drugs, it was all it took.

Though he knew better and had all the tools to resist, his desire to fit in became an unhealthy obsession. Hassan quickly went from smoking pot to experimenting with other drugs. He eventually landing on heroin. It took an enforced detox in a jail cell and his father's cancer to give him the will to climb out of the deep, dark hole he'd lived in for six years.

About the Author
Jude Hassan was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and lives there to this day with his wife and son. Jude published his memoir, Suburban Junky, following the loss of his dear friend to addiction. Along with his role as a speaker and mentor to those seeking help with substance abuse, Jude works at Preferred Family Healthcare in St. Louis assisting addicts as they begin the treatment process. Jude's story has garnered both local and national attention due to its relevance to today's heroin and opiate epidemic.
