Cats Want to Take Over the World
We all know that cats want to take over the world. What? You didn't know that? If you have a furry feline in your life, you know they are planning on world domination...right after their nap.
Yes, cats are planning world domination. There's even an international organization known as the Cat Board that is planning right now as you are reading this. Lucky for humans, cats are a little lazy.
That's where the Totally Ninja Raccoons come in. These little masked bandits decided they aren't meant to be ordinary, but chose to be something more, ninjas!
Gypsy, head of the Cat Board, hires the Totally Ninja Raccoons to track the elusive Bigfoot. She's after Bigfoot's powers of invisibility and stealth in her quest to rule the world, but she double crosses the raccoons and doesn't pay them, and thus the rivalry between Gypsy and the Totally Ninja Raccoons is born.
There are currently four book in the Totally Ninja Raccoon series.
The Totally Ninja Raccoon series is great for the reluctant reader from second to fourth grade, though there are younger and older readers. My nieces are just entering kindergarten and love the books as bedtime stories. Grandmothers love buying them for their grandchildren that live outside of Tioga County.
The Totally Ninja Raccoon series is set right here in Wellsboro Pennsylvania, and is specifically geared towards reluctant readers. It's your classic trio with a twist. Think the "Three Investigators meet the "Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles" with a little "Ghost Busters" in the mix.What started as an idea to score free food soon ends up giving the raccoons a glimpse into another world, a world of shadows, mysteries, and plots.
I've written a fifth Totally Ninja Raccoon adventure, The Totally Ninja Raccoons & The Catmas Caper. The book is finished Now, it just has to be illustrated, formatted, and all the little things it takes to make it into an actual book that you can turn the pages. I'm starting a Kickstarter to build awareness and to take pre-orders. I will have this book out in November, in time for Christmas.
The Totally Ninja Raccoons & The Catmas Caper is is the super, special Christmas edition. The infamous Cat Board is once again plotting against the Totally Ninja Raccoons and want to eliminate Christmas! Will The Totally Ninja Raccoons be able to stop the Cat Board and save Christmas?
Every ten dollars will get you one copy of The Totally Ninja Raccoons and the Catmas Caper mailed to you first class anywhere in the United States. The Totally Ninja Raccoon series is available worldwide, but shipping is too expensive to offer this Kickstarter outside the United States.
What started as an idea to score free food soon ends up giving the raccoons a glimpse into another world, a world of shadows, mysteries, and plots.
There are things in heaven and earth than the raccoons ever dreamed. Cats are trying to take over the world. Monsters are real, and Chinese food really will make you hungry soon after you eat it. It's up to The Totally Ninja Raccoons to stop it.
The Totally Ninja Raccoons Are:
Rascal: He's the shortest brother and loves doughnuts. He's great with his paws and makes really cool gadgets. He's a little goofy and loves both his brothers, even when they pick on him, but maybe not right then.
Bandit: He's the oldest brother. He's tall and lean. He's super smart and loves to read. He leads the Totally Ninja Raccoons, but he couldn't do it by himself.
Kevin: He may be the middle brother, but he refuses to be stuck in the middle. He has the moves and the street smarts that the Totally Ninja Raccoons are going to need, even if it does sometimes gets them into trouble as well as out of trouble.

Bring Your Claymore Sword to Work Day
My goal is to establish a day to bring your Claymore Sword to Work Day. Sure, it should be every day, and it should be a claymore sword, but I'm of Scottish Heritage. Hell, the Roman Empire built a wall to keep my people out. Didn't work Hadrian.
I'm also an American, so I'm cool with broadswords or long swords, even rapiers, or the occasional falcion sword, but I think polearms should be left on the wall where they belong, because if people start bringing their Ox Tongues, soon their will be Bec de Corbins, and you know where that leads----Bill the Barbarian in "Operation Ragnarok"

Everyone loves raccoons. They're playful, and mischievous. Sure, they might tips over your garbage cans, but maybe it was the dog next door, or those pesky stray cats. You don't know.
Some might call these cute creatures are bandits or thieves, but with their masks, I always thought they were more like little ninjas, and thus The Totally Ninja Raccoons were born.
The Totally Ninja Raccoons are your basic heroes for hire. They work cheap, sometimes for a little Chinese takeout or a stale doughnut.
It's your classic trio with a twist. Think the Three Investigators meet the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles with a little Ghost Busters in the mix.

The New Cider Maker's Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for Craft Producers
All around the world, the public's taste for fermented cider has been growing more rapidly than at any time in the past 150 years.And with the growing interest in locally grown and artisanal foods, many new cideries are springing up all over North America, often started up by passionate amateurs who want to take their cider to the next level as small-scale craft producers.
To make the very best cider whether for yourself, your family, and friends or for market you first need a deep understanding of the processes involved, and the art and science behind them. Fortunately, The New Cider Maker's Handbook is here to help. Author Claude Jolicoeur is an internationally known, award-winning cider maker with an inquiring, scientific mind. His book combines the best of traditional knowledge and techniques with up-to-date, scientifically based practices to provide today's cider makers with all the tools they need to produce high-quality ciders.
The New Cider Maker's Handbook is divided into five parts containing:
An accessible overview of the cider making process for beginners;
Recommendations for selecting and growing cider-appropriate apples;
Information on juice-extraction equipment and directions on how to build your own grater mill and cider press;
A discussion of the most important components of apple juice and how these may influence the quality of the cider;
An examination of the fermentation process and a description of methods used to produce either dry or naturally sweet cider, still or sparkling cider, and even ice cider.
This book will appeal to both serious amateurs and professional cider makers who want to increase their knowledge, as well as to orchardists who want to grow cider apples for local or regional producers. Novices will appreciate the overview of the cider-making process, and, as they develop skills and confidence, the more in-depth technical information will serve as an invaluable reference that will be consulted again and again. This book is sure to become the definitive modern work on cider making.
A mechanical engineer by profession, Claude Jolicoeur first developed his passion for apples and cider after acquiring a piece of land on which there were four rows of old abandoned apple trees. He started making cider in 1988 using a no-compromise approach, stubbornly searching for the highest possible quality. Since then, his ciders have earned many awards and medals at competitions, including a Best of Show at the prestigious Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition (GLINTCAP).
Claude actively participates in discussions on forums like the Cider Digest, and is regularly invited as a guest speaker to events such as the annual Cider Days festival in western Massachusetts. He lives in Quebec City.

Make Mead Like a Viking
A complete guide to using the best ingredients and minimal equipment to create fun and flavorful brews
Ancient societies brewed flavorful and healing meads, ales, and wines for millennia using only intuition, storytelling, and knowledge passed down through generations no fancy, expensive equipment or degrees in chemistry needed. In Make Mead Like a Viking, homesteader, fermentation enthusiast, and self-described Appalachian Yeti Viking Jereme Zimmerman summons the bryggjemann of the ancient Norse to demonstrate how homebrewing mead arguably the world's oldest fermented alcoholic beverage can be not only uncomplicated but fun.
Armed with wild-yeast-bearing totem sticks, readers will learn techniques for brewing sweet, semi-sweet, and dry meads, melomels (fruit meads), metheglins (spiced meads), Ethiopian t ej, flower and herbal meads, braggots, honey beers, country wines, and even Viking grog, opening the Mead Hall doors to further experimentation in fermentation and flavor. In addition, aspiring Vikings will explore:
The importance of local and unpasteurized honey for both flavor and health benefits;
Why modern homebrewing practices, materials, and chemicals work but aren t necessary;
How to grow and harvest herbs and collect wild botanicals for use in healing, nutritious, and magical meads, beers, and wines;
Hops recent monopoly as a primary brewing ingredient and how to use botanicals other than hops for flavoring and preserving mead, ancient ales, and gruits;
The rituals, mysticism, and communion with nature that were integral components of ancient brewing and can be for modern homebrewers, as well;
Recommendations for starting a mead circle to share your wild meads with other brewers as part of the growing mead-movement subculture; and more
Whether you ve been intimidated by modern homebrewing's cost or seeming complexity in the past and its focus on the use of unnatural chemicals or are boldly looking to expand your current brewing and fermentation practices, Zimmerman's welcoming style and spirit will usher you into exciting new territory. Grounded in history and mythology, but like Odin's ever-seeking eye focusing continually on the future of self-sufficient food culture, Make Mead Like a Viking is a practical and entertaining guide for the ages.

A Halloween Treat was published in Family Circle in the late 1980's and hasn't resurfaced since. This is that story's first appearance in book form.

Turn the book over to its back cover to read from the other direction, and you'll delve into a collection of Gorey's ghosts, curated from his extensive oeuvre. Charmingly spooky, these ghastly phantasms come in all shapes and sizes--the perfect thing to curl up with on a chilling Halloween night.

The longlist for this year's National Book Awards, and why YOU should be interested!
Hi, all! This is from Kasey... I hardly ever post to the blog any more, just as me, just my recommendations. But here it is, and I used a HUGE cheat list.
In my probably not-so-humble opinion, the National Book Awards are THE award list to look at for books. Looking for a new list of choices for book club? Look at the Nt'l Book Award nominees for the year. Looking for a new author? Check out who won the Nt'l Book Award over the past several years. Tired of what's touted on TV, or what's in the drugstore racks... feel the algorithms at Amazon just don't get you? Look no further.
The National Book Award nominees and winners are just the right balance -- beautifully written, with obvious talent, but not so ivory tower or hoity-toity that they aren't accessible to someone without a degree in literature.
I'd say more, but I'd rather you peruse the list. I suggest picking one title (or more, if you're ambitious) and trying to read it before the awards are announced November 16. I just happen to know a great little indie bookstore that will give you a great deal on any of these titles ;)

Operation Ragnarok (Kobo eBook)
We are all just killing time, until time eventually kills us. We go through life knowing death is waiting, but not knowing what comes next. I don't have to wonder anymore, because I died.
The sages say, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Mine started with just a single click. This is an epic tale full of danger, adventure, friends, and a wolf the size of a bull moose, and it all started on my living room couch.
Operation Ragnarok is a fantastical adventure with comedic elements about a group of gamers going through a mid-life crisis, instead of the little red corvette, they decide to steal a Viking longship from a museum. It's a story of friendship, sacrifice, and unleashing Hel on Earth...
Shadows Over Main Street: An Anthology of Small-Town Lovecraftian Terror
What happens when idyllic small-towns, and the simple folk who inhabit them, collide with inexplicable evil borne of a vast and uncaring cosmos?
Imagine a series of stories set in a golden era of American life, where worldly troubles are regarded from a distance, if at all. Hear the buzz of playing cards clipped in children's spokes echo down quiet lanes. Smell the faint aroma of rich tobacco smoke from an old man's pipe on a shady boulevard. Listen to the gossip of small towns where everyone knows everyone's business. Or do they?
Sometimes, deadly secrets lurk out in the barn. Sometimes, unimaginable evil awaits us in the root cellar. Sometimes, we fall under the sway of the Shadows Over Main Street.
Contains stories and poems by: Gary Braunbeck, Nick Mamatas, Josh Malerman, Mary SanGiovanni, Tim Curran, Rena Mason, Lucy A. Snyder, Stephanie Wytovich, Kevin Lucia, Chesya Burke, Brian Hodge, James Chambers, Aaron Polson, T. Fox Dunham, Richard Thomas, Adrian Ludens, Cameron Suey, Lisa Morton, Jay Wilburn, and John Sunseri.
Foreword by Ramsey Campbell.
