About the author: Jeffrey L. Marion, PhD, was a founding member of the Leave No Trace board of directors and spent a decade as chairman of the Educational Review Committee, helping to develop LNT's principles, outdoor practices, courses, and educational materials. He is currently employed by the U.S. Geological Survey and stationed at Virginia Tech University, where he is also an adjunct professor in the College of Natural Resources and Environment. He lives in Blacksburg, Virginia.
