Beautiful Like a Mayfly

Beautiful Like a Mayfly is both a travelogue and a collection of nature essays, ranging from distant lands to the back yard. In this personal narrative, canvassing four decades of cultural exploration and outdoor activity, the author touches upon myriad social and environmental issues with compassion, erudition, and a little dry humor. Whether quaffing beer in Bavaria, roaming through ancient Greek ruins, fly-fishing trout streams out west and closer to home, doing conservation work in New York, or living simply in the Virginia countryside, Franklin fully engages the world while maintaining something of an observer's distance. And the sights and sounds of various songbirds crop up along the way.
